‘1971’ director Amrit Sagar reveals that Manoj Bajpayee’s fee for the film was Rs 40 lakh out of the Rs 1.85 crore budget

Amrit Sagar, who directed the 2007 release ‘1971’, recently revealed that its lead actor Manoj Bajpayee had taken a remuneration of Rs 40 lakh out of the whole Rs 1.85 crore budget.

Manoj Bajpayee has now emerged as one of the most promising actors in contemporary Indian cinema. Through his solid performance in ‘The Family Man’, he has managed to carve a niche for himself in the industry. With the boom of OTT, Bajpayee and many of his peers found their strong holding.

‘1971’, starring Manoj Bajpayee, became the talk of the town in 2020, during the onset of the pandemic, which too accelerated his journey in the industry. Though ‘1971’ didn’t make the impact it was expected to during its initial theatrical release, the film’s digital version on YouTube, rightfully found its audience.

In a recent interview with Indian Express, Amrit Sagar revealed that Manoj Bajpayee had confidence in the film while they were shooting. The film is based on the life of 54 prisoners of war (POWs). The director recalled that he and his team had worked ‘really hard’ on the film. And it was ‘disappointing’ and ‘heartbreaking’ to see it not doing well. He also recalled how Manoj said, “picture choti ya badi nahi hoti, achi ya buri hoti hai (a film isn’t big or small, it’s good or bad).”

He also revealed that Manoj Bajpayee’s fee for the role was Rs 40 lakh, out of the Rs 1.85 crore budget of the film. Though ‘1971’ didn’t win at the box office, it won the National award. At the 55th National Film Awards, ‘1971’ won the Best Feature Film award.
