Ben Stokes’ side stunned the cricketing world in producing a comeback for the ages on days three and four of the match, eventually winning by 28 runs following sensational performances from Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley.

Pope scored 196 runs to set India a competitive required target of 230 to win the Test, before Hartley recovered from a difficult first innings to take seven wickets, including the final one of Mohammed Siraj to secure victory.

Millions of pounds was naturally bet on the game, with India heavy favourites to win the match for the majority after they secured a first innings lead of 190 runs.

Punters thought they had secured some easy money in betting on the home side to win the match, but they ended up losing out, with large sums down the drain come the end of the match.

On the Betfair Exchange, £683,790 was traded at 1.05, which is odds of 1/20, giving India over 95 per cent chance of winning the match.

A further £539,832 was traded at 1.06, odds of 1/16, giving India over 94 per cent chance of winning, and £389,116 at 1.04 – odds of 1/25.

£94,168 was traded at 1.03, odds of 1/33, and £87,419 at 1.02, odds of 1/50 which gave India over 98 per cent chance of winning the match.

The home side, who are normally such a formidable side on home soil, dominated the first two days, but the game turned when Ollie Pope got going half-way through the third day.

Traders took their chances on small gains with the game looking a foregone conclusion, but the visitors had other ideas as they pulled off one of their most famous victories.

Hartley, somewhat of a wildcard pick in the team, became the first English spinner since Jim Laker to take a seven-wicket haul on debut having been hit for six off his first ball in the format on day one.

He dismissed Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Subman Gill, Axar Patel, Srikar Bharat, Ravichandran Ashwin, and lastly Mohammed Siraj to secure a memorable first game for him and victory for his side.
