The news came less than two hours before the scheduled 3pm kick-off, with the referee ruling the pitch unplayable after a second inspection.

‘After an initial 11am pitch inspection, referee Sam Purkiss, the EFL and PGMOL requested a further 1pm pitch inspection, in which the surface has been deemed unplayable.’ The club wrote on their website.

‘Refunds will be made available once the date for the rearranged fixture has been confirmed.

‘Apologies for any inconvenience caused to supporters.’

Barnsley fans who had travelled nearly 150 miles down the A1 to the Lamex Stadium lamented the timing of the decision, with many questioning why a second inspection of the pitch had been warranted.

The cancellation marks the latest disruption of the sporting calendar caused by the sub-freezing temperatures felt across the country.

Salford City had been set to face Colchester United on Friday evening before the game was ultimately postponed.

Meanwhile several League Two fixtures scheduled for Saturday have also been axed, with Notts County and Walsall opting to postpone their fixtures against Stockport County and Accrington Stanley.

Likewise Swindon vs Tranmere, Harrogate vs Grimsby, Bradford vs Doncaster, Mansfield vs Sutton United and Wimbledon vs Crawley that have all been postponed due to the adverse conditions.

The third tier has also experienced further disruption due to the weather, with Cheltenham’s League One clash with Carlisle United, Northampton’s visit to Oxford United, and the clash between Port Vale and Wycombe also called off.
