Riveiro explains why he substituted Sipho Chaine for Mpontshane
Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has explained why he substituted Sipho Chaine for Siyabonga Mpontshane during their 7-1 win over Golden Arrows on Saturday.
Chaine, the Buccaneers’ first-choice keeper this season, made way in the 54th minute.
Despite the goalkeeper change, Pirates dominated the match with ease, even though Mpontshane conceded a goal.
Riveiro has urged his team to build on the form they showed against Arrows.
“It is a heavy score and it can be something we capitalise on in a positive way for the future in terms of trusting in ourselves and knowing what we are capable of. I am not talking about scoring seven goals but the type of football we play,” Riveiro said after the match.
“Is also dangerous to think that from now it is going to be a piece of cake or teams are going to fear us or something like that. We must be mature and make it count for the future.”
Regarding the goalkeeper change, Riveiro said Chaine felt discomfort during the game. At the time a change was made, Pirates were leading 4-0.
“It was like a discomfort [on Sipho Chaine],” said Riveiro. “He played, but I cannot tell you how serious it can be.

“He could have continued a little bit more if we wanted. But, we didn’t want to take so much more risk.
“It’s not because of the result, so let’s hear in the next 24 hours how serious the injury is,” he said.
Riveiro will have to sweat on Chaine’s fitness as his side next play AmaZulu in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals.
The goalkeeper was in top form earlier in the season helping the Buccaneers to a MTN8 title.
