More Springboks coming home to South African rugby

Another batch of Springboks are considering a return to South African franchise rugby, according to new reports.

It has been noted by Rapport that JD Schickerling, Jan Serfontein, Jason Jenkins, Trevor Nyakane and Jasper Wiese have all shown an interest in playing their club rugby in South Africa.

More Springboks coming home

Serfontein is the latest name to be added to that list of capped internationals who want to come home.

The 30-year-old Springbok centre, who joined the French powerhouse Montpellier in 2017 after leaving the Bulls for Europe, has made over 100 appearances for the Top 14 team.

Although Wiese’s agents have been in communication with the Sharks, the loose forward signed to Premiership oufit Leicester is also the subject of a lucrative offer from Stade Francais in the Top 14.

Both head coach John Plumtree and director of rugby Neil Powell are keen to make changes to the Sharks roster, including cutting players who aren’t performing up to par and relying less on the frequently absent current Springboks.

The Sharks have not only been keen on Wiese but have also identified Jason Jenkins as a possible solution to a weak lineout. The former Bulls lock. Jenkins has turned out 24 times for Leinster since joining the Irish side in 2022 and would bring a wealth of experience to a young Sharks squad.

Sharks and Bulls leading recruitment drive for now

In Durban, there is also an interest in uncapped South African loose forward Ruan Ackermann who remains at Gloucester despite his father departing his role as coach of the Premiership side.

The Bulls have made no secret of their desire to lure big players back to Loftus having already signed Willie Le Roux this season.

Jake White’s team are believed to be eager to secure the return to the team of Springbok Nyakane.
