Gary Neville believes Erik ten Hag is going through an ‘audition’ at Manchester United between now and the end of the season after Sunday’s draw against Tottenham.

Ten Hag has found himself under pressure this season given United’s dismal Champions League run and torrid Premier League form, but has survived in his position so far.

The Dutchman held lengthy and optimistic talks with new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier in the week, but his own future at the club is less than secure.

Ten Hag was in a solid position at the start of the year after delivering silverware and a third-place Premier League finish last season, however, the arrival of Ratcliffe and his INEOS team could spell trouble for the manager’s future.

Ratcliffe is expected to make large-scale changes at United once his 25 per cent investment has been ratified by the Premier League and Ten Hag could become the victim of such a personnel change.

Sunday’s showing was an improved battling performance from other results this season as Ratcliffe watched his first game from the stands and Neville explained fresh ideas at the club meant Ten Hag was in an ‘audition’ to keep his job.

‘I think that those players coming back I think is when obviously  it’s hard. I think he will be judged in this last three months of the season because there’s no doubt there that he loses quite a lot of his experience and his leaders in the team.

”So yeah, I think that get those back in next week or two. They’ve got a break now. So those players should be back. And I think February through too sort of May, is a bit of an audition really, in the sense of obviously Jim Ratcliffe and Dave Brailsford.

‘They’re gonna be there week in week out watching what goes on, because they’re going to take over the running of the football club on the football side imminently and they’re going to want to make some sort of big decisions on and off the pitch,’ he added.

The extent of the sporting changes that will be implemented at the club in the near future is yet to be seen but main priorities lie in appointing a CEO and sporting director.

Ratcliffe was in attendance for his first match since his investment in the 13-time Premier League champions was announced.

The British billionaire has already been seen getting to work alongside sporting partner Sir Dave Brailsford who is renowned for his work on making incremental advantages within sports teams.
