Marcia Hines reveals why her new role in Grease The Musical 'opens doors'

Marcia Hines landed the role of Teen Angel in Grease The Musical, made famous by actor Frankie Avalon and his performance of the iconic song Beauty School Dropout.

The Australian Idol judge, 70, proved on Tuesday she’s got what is takes to fill the shoes of Avalon and then some.

Speaking with Daily Mail Australia during a media preview at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, the veteran performer said the huge casting move ‘opens doors’.

‘It’s wonderful. It opens doors. It’s got nothing to do with being a woman. When you do a role, you’re either good at it or you’re not,’ she said.

‘Being black’s got nothing to do with it either. I got the gig, because I got the gig.’

She added: ‘I’m just very proud of myself and any woman that comes before me, black or white. It’s just good to be in the industry.’

Marcia went on to joke her glamorous dress as Teen Angel ‘is bigger than I could ever be’, and added ‘it was wonderful [the producers] trusted me with the role’.

The American-Australian singer’s appearance on stage comes as she’s set to appear as a full-time judge on the next installment of Australian Idol.

Marcia appeared as a guest judge on the last season, and was part of the original judging panel alongside record executive Ian Dickson and singer Mark Holden.

The pop legend will join ARIA-winning songstress Amy Shark and radio king Kyle Sandilands.

Meanwhile, fellow judges Harry Connick Jr. and Meghan Trainor won’t be returning, leaving the panel one person down.

An insider told Yahoo part of the reason behind the series makeover was to ensure next year’s season had more focus on music than the behind the scenes drama.

‘There are too many singing shows where the judges distract from the contestants, and this year they want the talent to be the main focus,’ they said.

‘Last year Kyle and Harry’s feud often overshadowed the performances.’

The 2024 season of the singing competition will air on Monday, 29 January, exactly two decades after Guy Sebastian made history on the inaugural season.
