Mikel Arteta addresses Arsenal crowd after near miss with powerful message - "don't be sad"

Mikel Arteta addressed the Arsenal crowd after they fell short in the Premier League title race and told them "we're going to get it".

The Gunners knew they needed a final-day turnaround if they were to be champions, but had to battle to secure their own three points against Everton. Their win was meaningless as Manchester City saw off West Ham, taking the lead within two minutes.

Arsenal have pushed Pep Guardiola's outfit throughout the season and, despite winning their final games, couldn't overhaul the champions as they failed to drop a point. It is another near miss for the north Londoners, who also finished second last term.

Their haul of 89 points is their second-best effort in Premier League history, but Arteta is determined to keep spirits high at the Emirates. The Spanish coach has transformed Arsenal and made them challengers once again and is adamant they will eventually get the job done.

He said: "All this is happening because you started believing, you started to be patient and started to understand what we tried to do. All the credit has to go to the players and the staff. Don't be sad. We want much more than that and we’re going to get it."

Arsenal needed a late Kai Havertz strike to eventually see off Everton, who had taken the lead thanks to a deflected Idrissa Gueye free-kick. Takehiro Tomiyasu had then drawn the hosts level just before the break, but never at any point did they put the necessary pressure on City.

The Manchester outfit led within seconds thanks to Phil Foden, who also made it 2-0. Mohamed Kudus pulled one back for West Ham, but Rodri's second-halg strike made it 3-1 to the champions, who saw the game out.

Arsenal have fallen narrowly short for the second year in succession

Arteta will no doubt be aware that, for all their forward strides, Arsenal have gone another season without a trophy despite their continued investment. He did though lead them into a Champions League quarter-final for the first time in well over a decade.

Havertz told TNT Sports: "What can I say? I feel sorry for all the Arsenal fans. We gave our best but it wasn't enough. Maybe in two or three months we can say it was a good fight. Right now I feel like we deserve more. It wasn't enough in the end but we go again next year."
