Shohei Ohtani does extra for first Dodgers walk-off hit

Shohei Ohtani delivered his first walk-off hit with the Dodgers, rocketing a two-strike RBI single to beat the Reds 3-2 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

With free runner Jason Heyward on second base and pinch-hitter Will Smith on first base with two outs in the 10th, Ohtani hit a ball 100.3 mph into right field that got past Jake Fraley for the Dodgers’ third-straight win.

“A Sho stopper,” Stephen Nelson said on the SportsNet LA call, “and a game winner.”

Ohtani’s first walk-off hit with the Dodgers was the second of his career, the last coming September 4, 2020 with the Angels.

He had two hits on Sunday, his eighth multi-hit game in May, during which he is hitting .393/.477/.750 with 14 RBI in 15 games.

Sunday was the Dodgers’ second walk-off win this season. The author of that first one — Andy Pages, on May 3 against the Braves — also drove in the other two runs for the Dodgers on Sunday.

One out after a Freddie Freeman single in the fourth inning, Pages wrapped a line drive inside the left field foul pole for a two-run home run off Hunter Greene to open the scoring.

After the first prolonged slump of his major league career, Pages at the plate has shown signs of life this weekend. He had a pinch-hit single Thursday in the only game to date that he didn’t start, and had hits in each of the last three games of the series as well, including an RBI single in Saturday’s win. Saturday marked Pages’ first RBI in 10 games, and Sunday was his first home run in 14 games.

Greene, the former second-overall draft pick out of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, was a tough opponent for the Dodgers on Sunday, still throwing 99 mph into the seventh inning. He average 98.8 mph on his 68 fastballs Sunday, and got 22 swinging strikes and eight strikeouts.

Jason Heyward singled to open the seventh and stole second base agains Greene, but he was stranded by reliever Fernando Cruz getting the final two outs of the inning.

Landon Knack was effective in his spot start after getting called up earlier Sunday, tying his major league high with five strikeouts and set a new best by inducing 13 swinging strikes. He allowed only three hits, all of them doubles. The first, a two-out two-bagger by Luke Maile in the third inning, was stranded. But the other two, back-to-back by Tyler Stephenson and Santiago Espinal in the fifth, gave the Reds their only run against Knack.

With a runner on second and two outs in the fifth inning, Knack was not allowed to face the Cincinnati lineup a third time throw. With two left-handers surrounding a switch-hitter at the top of said lineup, southpaw Ryan Yarbrough was brought in, and he stranded the runner in scoring position with a Will Benson line drive conveniently hit right at shortstop Mookie Betts, .850 expected batting average be damned.

Yarbrough, pitching in his first game in a week, got one trip through the lineup himself, but after getting through the sixth inning, the seventh was a turbulent ride.

A leadoff walk was followed by a sacrifice bunt by Stuart Fairchild that Yarbrough and instinctively wheeled and threw to first base, only Gavin Lux was not there covering. Fairchild was credited with a single on the play.

The throw down the line made for two runners in scoring position instead of one. Yarbrough got a foul popup for the first out, then was pulled after an intentional walk to Tyler Stephenson to load the bases.

In came Alex Vesia, more likely to strike someone out than Yarbrough. Vesia got a strikeout, of Elly De La Cruz, but he walked Spencer Steer on nine pitches first to force in the tying run, just the second inherited runner (out of 12) allowed to score by Vesia this season. Another foul popout ended a weird inning in which the Reds tied the game and the only ball out of the infield was Yarbrough’s throw to nowhere.

Vesia pitched a perfect eighth inning with two more strikeouts, and Blake Treinen worked around a pair of two-out singles to pitch a scoreless ninth, his sixth consecutive scoreless appearance since returning from the injured list.

Treinen’s final out of the ninth was Elly De La Cruz, who struck out four times on Sunday. After running roughshod over the Dodgers in Thursday’s series opener with four hits, four stolen bases, and three runs scored, De La Cruz was hitless in 13 at-bats over the final three games with eight strikeouts.

Veteran lefty Anthony Banda, who was acquired Friday from his minor league deal with Cleveland and called up Sunday morning, pitched a scoreless 10th inning to keep the free runner De La Cruz on second base. Banda, the 26th pitcher used by the Dodgers this season, earned the win in his debut.
