Aussie bloke is dubbed the 'real life Captain Underpants' after battling blaze in his jocks

An Aussie bloke who sprang into action and fought a fire in his underwear has earned the nickname 'Captain Underpants' for his scantily clad heroics.

Nathan Fry, 22, awoke to the fire alarm blaring at his grandmother's home in Parkside, Adelaide, about 3am and didn't waste any time to stop the blaze.

Despite the temperature dropping below 10C, Mr Fry helped his friends out of the house wearing only his underwear.

He then saw his grandmother attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose and took over, slowing its spread until firefighters arrived.

Emergency services arrived at the home at 3:08am and managed to control and extinguish the fire within 30 minutes.

Thankfully no one was injured.

Mr Fry said that he woke up to smoke filling the hallway and had to respond swiftly.

'I made sure everyone was getting out of the house and stuff,' he told Sunrise on Monday.

'Then I jumped out the back where my nan was on the hose and I grabbed the hose. My first instinct was to just get it out.

'It was pretty big and really scary.'

Filled with adrenaline, Mr Fry didn't even notice the cold or the peculiarity of battling a fire in his underwear until firefighters arrived.

'Once the firies came and I walked down on the street there was like four fire trucks, four cop cars an ambulance and a camera, and I was like, oh God, I'm in my undies.'

South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service arrived at the scene within six minutes of receiving the Triple Zero alert.

A spokesperson said the fire was accidentally started when a partially lit cigarette ignited several cigarette butts in a drink can used for disposal.

The MFS estimated that the fire caused between $70,000 and $80,000 in damages, significantly less than what could have occurred if they hadn't arrived on the scene so quickly.
