Srinagar: In a major breakthrough for security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, two commanders of a terrorist group were among three terrorists killed in the Kulgam encounter which went on for over 50 hours.. Two terrorist, including, Basit Dar, the top commander of The Resistance Front (TRF), were killed on Tusday. Meanwhile, the third terrorist was eliminated on Wednesday.
The terrorist killed today has been identified as Momin Mir. He was the deputy commander of TRF. Meanwhile, the identity of the third terrorist is yet to be ascertained. Notably, the TRF is an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Who was Momin Mir?
Like Dar, Mir was also involved in a series of terror activities. He was the lone surviving terrorist from Srinagar and has been on the security radar since his joining in 2021. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had announced a reward for providing information regarding his presence in January 2022.
Mir was involved in many terror-related cases particularly target killings of non-locals in Valley including J&K Police personnel Safiullah Qadri , who was shot dead at Soura Srinagar in 2022. He was listed among the “Most Wanted and A+ category” terrorists by security forces in the Valley.
Who was Bashit Dar?
Dar, the operational chief of TRF, was a highly sought-after terrorist with a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head.
He has been a prominent figure in the region’s militant landscape since 2021. According to reports, Dar was implicated in a total of 18 terror-related incidents, including attacks resulting in civilian casualties and targeting the Kashmiri Pandit community.
Basit Dar, a resident of Redwani Payeen, Kulgam in south Kashmir, is said to be the mastermind behind civilian and targeted killings in Kashmir.
Kulgam Encounter:
The encounter broke out two days after the Poonch terror attack in which one air warrior was killed and four others injured. The encounter erupted after security personnel received intelligence inputs regarding the presence of three terrorists in the area. Reacting to the information, forces cordoned off the area. the gunfight broke out after terrorists opened fire on the security personnel. In retaliation, the security forces gave a befitting reply.
