The Netherlands will take on Austria in their final Group D fixture on Tuesday, knowing that one point will be enough to progress to the knockout round of Euro 2024.

The Dutch opened their campaign with an impressive performance against Poland, but they still required a late winner from super-sub Wout Weghorst to come from behind and collect all three points before being denied a 1-0 victory over France in controversial circumstances after Xavi Simons' supposed late winner was disallowed.

As for Austria, Ralf Rangnick's side have enjoyed a strong start to the tournament themselves, as they were arguably the better side against one of the pre-tournament favourites, France, in their opener but were downed 1-0 due to a Max Wober own goal.

They then put on a fine display at the Olympiastadion in Berlin with a cruising 3-1 win and some sensational play in the second-half of that game to dump out Poland.

Netherlands vs. Austria lineups & team news

The Netherlands lost both midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners to injury in the week leading up to the tournament but did not appear to suffer any fresh injuries in the opening two games.

Ajax attacker Brian Brobbey returned to the bench following a hamstring issue, with Jeremie Frimpong replacing Joey Veerman being Ronald Koeman's only alteration on Friday.

Changes will presumably be kept to a minimum again against Austria as the Netherlands aim to secure a top-two finish in the group.

Netherlands starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Verbruggen (GK) —  Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake —  Reijnders, Schouten —  Frimpong, Simons, Gakpo —  Depay.

Austria boss Ralf Rangnick tweaked his starting lineup ahead of the Poland win, so more changes cannot be ruled out for Tuesday.

Max Wober and Kevin Danso were paired in central defence against France, but Gernot Trauner and Philipp Lienhart replaced them last time out. After scoring the opener, Trauner was later withdrawn due to a muscular problem, so his status remains in slight doubt.

Veteran Marko Arnautovic, who replaced Michael Gregoritsch up front on Friday, will hope to keep his starting spot after scoring a spot-kick last time out. Wolfsburg winger Patrick Wimmer could also step in after being sent on in place of midfielder Florian Grillitsch early in the second half against Poland, while Alexander Prass is another dynamic option pushing for a start at left-back.

Austria starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Pentz (GK) —  Posch, Danso, Lienhart, Mwene — Seiwald, Laimer — Wimmer, Baumgartner, Sabitzer — Arnautovic.

Netherlands vs. Austria prediction

  • Score prediction: Netherlands 2-2 Austria

The Netherlands should be cautious of Austria, who have excelled in both games in Group D despite losing narrowly to France.

They are ultra-intense and combative under former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, while their need for victory means the disciplined and well-drilled Austrian unit will force the issue with early intent and intensity.

The Dutch, though, were dominant against Poland but struggled to finish their glut of chances in the absence of a clinical finisher before possibly being unfortunate not to have beaten France.

This is all set up to be a fascinating and highly entertaining contest between two good sides. A draw could see both teams advance to the round of 16, with the Austrians in good stead to make it as one of the four best third-placed sides.
