Delhi HC stays Arvind Kejriwal's bail as ED challenges lower court's order
On Friday, the Delhi High Court said the trial court order granting bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and chief minister Arvind Kejriwal shall not be given effect to till it hears the Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s plea challenging the relief granted in the money laundering case linked to the alleged excise scam.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) mentioned its plea challenging the trial court order for an urgent hearing before a bench of Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja, according to a report by news agency PTI. The High Court agreed to hear the matter and said that till then the trial court's order shall not be acted upon.
A lower court had granted relief to the AAP chief on Thursday night and declined ED’s plea to keep the bail order in abeyance for 48 hours. The court ordered Kejriwal's release on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh but imposed certain conditions including that he will not try to hamper the investigation or influence any witness.
Following the trial court's decision, the ED on Friday moved the Delhi High Court challenging the bail granted to Kejriwal.
The Delhi CM has been in custody in Tihar Jail. Arrested on March 21, Kejriwal was out on interim bail last month to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections which concluded on June 1. He surrendered on June 2.
