SINGAPORE – Cathay Cineplexes will be shutting its operations at AMK Hub on June 30, with the Ang Mo Kio mall set to refurbish the fourth floor of the building.
A Cathay Cineplexes spokeswoman told The Straits Times on June 19 that the cinema’s lease has ended but it will remain fully operational till the last movie session on the evening of June 30. The timing of the last movie will be released in the same week of the closure.
AMK Hub’s asset and property manager, Link Asset Management, told ST on June 20 that it will be reconfiguring the space and repositioning the mix of tenants to better serve the community.
“Upon the completion of the asset enhancement project in 2026, visitors can look forward to new vibrancy and fresh experiences within this social hub,” the spokesperson added.
Other affected tenants at the mall, which is located at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, include arcade operator Timezone and Western food chain Eighteen Chefs.
Cathay Cineplexes has five remaining outlets – at Causeway Point in Woodlands, Downtown East in Pasir Ris, West Mall in Bukit Batok, Jem in Jurong East and Century Square in Tampines. Its spokeswoman said it will be business as usual for these outlets.
“There will be no disruption of services at the other Cathay Cineplexes outlets in Singapore,” she said. “Stay tuned for exciting news on our new outlets coming up.”
The AMK Hub cinema opened on June 16, 2007. It has eight halls and can accommodate a total of 1,800 moviegoers.
From now until June 30, the cinema operator is offering movie tickets at $10 at the AMK Hub outlet. Tickets usually cost between $11 and $16.50.
In addition, a medium-sized popcorn combo will be priced at $7 instead of $10.

The Cathay Cineplexes spokeswoman did not respond to queries about the fate of its employees at AMK Hub or the locations of any new outlets. However, it is slated to open a new outlet at *Scape, which is next to Orchard Cineleisure, in 2024.
Former Ang Mo Kio resident Kayven Tan, 28, told ST that he felt sad after learning about the cinema’s closure.
“I would frequent it often during my growing-up years in primary and secondary school,” he said, adding that he would usually gather a group of friends to watch action and blockbuster films once or twice a month. “It was definitely a place of fond memories for me.”
In a Facebook post, Timezone said its last day of operations at the mall would be on June 24 and encouraged patrons to drop by on June 23 for their last gaming session.
It added: “We’ve just opened three new venues and we still have 15 other venues across Singapore for your daily dose of fun and joy.”
The three new outlets are located at Singapore Post Centre, Pasir Ris Mall and Waterway Point.
