Brendan Grace's wife taken to court over €1.1m pub debt left by late comedian

Eileen Doyle, the widow of the late comedian Brendan, has been brought before the court over a huge debt allegedly left behind by the comedian at the time of his passing.

Brendan obtained a loan to buy a pub on the main street of Killaloe, in Clare, later rebranding it Brendan Grace's Bar in 2006.

It was initially run by the comedian's daughter Amanda and her husband but amid the struggle of the global recession, the couple decided to put the pub on the market five years later.

Permanent TSB secured a judgment against Brendan over the loan in 2012 which amounted to €1.1million but the debt was never repaid. Five years later he passed away from lung cancer at the age of 68.

Now his wife Eileen who is overseeing the comedian's estate is being pursued over the loan which was bought in 2018 by Everyday Finance DAC.

The finance company claims that the loan should have been paid off before the estate was actioned, reports the Irish Independent.

Eileen who is based in Florida claims that she was unaware of the initial judgment made against her husband by Permanent TSB and is contesting the case.

During the hearing on Monday, Everyday Finance issued a motion for judgment by way of a defence.

Counsel Gary Hayes agreed that the motion could be struck out on consent with an order for his client's costs after a pleading was filed by Ms Grace. The case is now expected to advance to trial unless an agreement is reached by both sides.
