2024 US Open recap: Bryson DeChambeau beats Rory McIlroy
Bryson Deschambo is a two time U.S. Open champion and he did in dramatic fashion, just like Paine Stewart did 25 years ago. I'm Ryan with Golf News Net here with a quick recap of the 124th and 2024 U.S. Open played at Pinehurst #2 in Pinehurst, NC. Bryson Deschambeau is your winner, making a clutch par with an up and down from 55 yards from a bunker on the final hole of regulation to win the tournament over Rory McIlroy by a shot on 6 under 274. For his part, McElroy led by two shots with five holes to go in his round. And had a very good opportunity to win his first major championship in 10 years. Unfortunately, Miss putts inside of four feet, including on the home hole, denied McIlroy pars that he needed and that would have given him the opportunity to win the US Open for the second time in his career and a fifth career major championship. McElroy did not talk with the media after the round and made his way to the Pinehurst Southern Pines Airport to get home to Florida very quickly. To Shambo for his part, though. Lived it up, really talked to the media and has played up his newfound attitude, newfound public persona. In the recent 12 to 18 months that he's really been actively working on it and playing on live at the same time, he talked about Payne Stewart, who is a fellow Southern Methodist University alum who won the US Open in dramatic fashion with a dramatic up and down on the 72nd hole 25 years ago in 1999 to deny Phil Mickelson at the time his first major championship. He's been very active on social media, getting golfers and fans alike to know him in a different way. Different way than he at least had been perceived. And now he is a major champion once again. He's had the best year in the major so far. He's been tied for 6th of the Masters, a runner up at the PGA Championship and now a winner in the US Open. We will see what happens in 25 days when the Open Championship gets started at Royal Troon in Scotland. The final men's major championship of the year. Pinehurst was an incredible host once again. Pinehurst number 2 will continue to host US Opens in the next 5 and six year periods as fighters #2 and Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Is considered a USGA anchor site and will host a variety of championships between now. And well into the twenty 40s.
