Cody Gakpo Leads Netherlands to Comeback Win
Liverpool’s attack hit a rough patch in the final third of the season but one of the players that seemed to be playing themselves into form was Gody Gakpo. The Dutchman looked to be finding his feet as he notched goals in the matches against Tottenham and Aston Villa.
Thankfully for the Netherlands, Gakpo has brought his scoring boots to Germany with him. The Oranje found themselves down to Poland early in their opening match against Poland as Adam Buksa fired a goal in at around the quarter hour mark. Gakpo managed to pull Netherlands level at about the half hour mark with a deflected goal that made it past Wojciech Szczęsny and gave the Dutch new life. Gakpo made way for eventual game winner Wout Weghorst, whose 83rd minute goal secured all three points.
It’s great news for Cody who’s looked a terrific worker in Liverpool’s attack and whose movement manages to open up lanes for other players. The goal tally, though, was always a source of criticism - 16 across all competitions isn’t something to sneeze at, to be fair - and so to see him continue to score is certainly a welcome site to Liverpool fans.
Now, the Netherlands look towards their marquee matchup against France, who will open up their Euro campaign on Monday against Austria. This match would also bring with it the potential for Liverpool players lines up across each other with Gakpo and Virgil Van Dijk suited up for the Netherlands and Ibrahima Konate for France. Netherlands face off against France on Friday, June 21st.
