Rory McIlroy WILL win multiple more majors despite dramatic US Open collapse, Bryson DeChambeau insists after securing victory at Pinehurst

Bryson DeChambeau has no doubt that Rory McIlroy will win recover from his extraordinary US Open collapse and win multiple more major championships.

DeChambeau triumphed at the end of incredible day of drama at Pinehurst, securing his second US Open title only after McIlroy missed two puts from inside four feet in the final three holes.

It meant McIlroy’s decade-long wait for a fifth major goes on. The Northern Irishman has now had 20 top-ten finishes since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

McIlroy made a swift exit from Pinehurst after yet more major heartache. He made bogeys on three of the final four holes, missing short par putts on 16 (2ft 6ins) and 18 (3ft 9ins).

‘I'd never wish it on anybody,’ said DeChambeau. ‘I was a little lucky. Rory didn't make a couple putts that he could have.’

DeChambeau won his first major at the 2020 US Open and had to endure four years – and several near misses – before winning here, courtesy of a remarkable up-and-down. The American is certain that McIlroy will add to the four he won between 2011 and 2014.

‘He'll win multiple more major championships. There's no doubt,’ DeChambeau said.

‘I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow. I have nothing but respect for how he plays the game of golf... he's a strong-minded individual.’

He added: ‘Rory is one of the best to ever play. Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special… I'd love to have a lot more battles with him. It would be a lot of fun. But Rory's going to do it at some point.’

DeChambeau revealed how he exorcised his demons to win after those years of heartache.

‘It was knowing how good my game is, how great of a place it's in, and just continuing to execute knowing the statistics would eventually fall my way,’ he said.

‘Hope. Golf, it's a game of luck. There's a lot of luck that has to happen and go your way out there.’

DeChambeau, who finished second at the PGA Championship and sixth at The Masters this year, added: ‘I knew if I could give my 100% effort on every single shot, I'd give myself a good chance this week, just like I did at the PGA, just like I did at the Masters.’
