Randeep Hooda is a character actor known to go to any length to infuse life into his on-screen role -- something he did for his film Veer Savarkar. Shedding light on the same, Hooda recalled not being able to "sleep at all for two years even after taking sleeping pills."
On being asked the reason, Hooda, who lost 30 kilos to play the character of Indian freedom fighter Savarkar, told Mashable India: "When one is hungry and has so much stress, then one's mind stops working. There is no serotonin to relax, no carbohydrates. I used to suffer from headaches but no acidity because I was not eating anything," said Hooda, 47.
How do carbohydrates impact sleep and stress levels?
Improving sleep quality and managing stress levels are often overlooked but critical components of a good lifestyle. According to experts, carbohydrate intake plays a crucial role in ensuring you have a good night's sleep.
Payal Sharma, Senior dietician, Dharamshila Narayana Hospital explained that the idea of consuming carbohydrates stems from the concept of nutrient timing and metabolic rate. "A carbohydrate-rich meal at night can promote better sleep due to the release of serotonin, which can indirectly reduce stress and improve overall well-being," said Sharma.

For the unversed, serotonin is known to boost one’s mental well-being and improve mood. "Studies have shown that gut health plays a significant role in influencing our mood and emotional state which can impact our sleep," said Dr Pratik Tibdewal, consultant gastroenterologist, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road in an earlier interaction with indianexpress.com.
What to consider?
It's essential to consider individual preferences and metabolic responses. According to Sharma, what works for one person may not work for another.
"Ultimately, weight loss is influenced by various factors, including overall calorie intake, macronutrient composition, exercise regimen, and lifestyle habits. It's crucial to focus on creating a sustainable, balanced diet and lifestyle that aligns with your goals and preferences. Consulting with a registered dietitian or nutritionist can provide personalised guidance based on your specific needs and circumstances," said Sharma.
