Three of the Big Four feature among the 10 ATP players with the best grass-court records, with Roger Federer just ahead of Novak Djokovic.

Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors are some of the other tennis icons who make the list.

Here, we look at the 10 men with the highest singles win percentages on grass in the Open Era (with a minimum of 50 wins on the surface).

10. Andy Murray – 118-29 (80.3%)

Andy Murray holds a 118-29 record from his 147 grass-court matches to date, making it his best surface by win rate.

The Brit has triumphed in eight of the 10 grass-court finals he has played, having won three titles at Wimbledon, a record five at Queen’s Club, as well as the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

9. Alex Metreveli – 119-27 (81.5%)

Alex Metreveli compiled a 119-27 record from the 147 matches he played on grass courts in the Open Era.

The Soviet player secured eight grass tournament victories, but his most notable result on the surface was his loss to Jan Kodes in the 1973 Wimbledon final.

8. Bjorn Borg – 72-16 (81.8%)

Bjorn Borg won 72 of his 88 matches on grass courts and claimed seven titles from the eight finals he reached on the surface.

The Swede won all five of his Wimbledon crowns in consecutive years from 1976 to 1980, while his only loss in a grass-court final was against John McEnroe at the All England Club in 1981.

7. Boris Becker – 116-25 (82.3%)

Boris Becker had a better win rate on grass than any other surface, having earned 116 victories from 141 matches (82.3%).

The German won seven grass-court titles, all of which came in London at Wimbledon (1985, 1986, 1989) and Queen’s Club, from 12 finals on the surface.

6. Jimmy Connors – 185-38 (83%)

Jimmy Connors won 185 of the 223 matches he contested on grass, was a nine-time champion at events on the surface, and also reached a further eight finals.

The American won each of the Australian Open (1974), Wimbledon (1974, 1982) and the US Open (1974) on grass courts.

5. Pete Sampras – 101-20 (83.5%)

Pete Sampras compiled a 101-20 grass-court record, making it his best surface in terms of win percentage.

The American collected 10 grass court-titles, seven of which came at Wimbledon between 1993 and 2000, from a total of 13 finals on the surface.

4. Rod Laver – 95-17 (84.8%)

In the Open Era, Rod Laver won 95 of the 112 matches he played on grass courts and triumphed at eight tournaments on the surface.

Half of the Australian’s grass titles came at Grand Slam events: Wimbledon (1968 and 1969), the Australian Open (1969) and the US Open (1969).

3. John McEnroe – 121-20 (85.816%)

John McEnroe had a higher win percentage on grass than any other surface in his career, having won 121 of the 141 matches he played.

The American secured eight-grass court titles, including three at Wimbledon, while he reached 13 singles finals overall on the surface.

2. Novak Djokovic – 115-19 (85.821%)

Novak Djokovic holds a 115-19 record from his 134 grass-court matches, with his 85.2% win rate his highest on a single surface.

The Serbian has won eight titles on grass, seven of which have come at Wimbledon, and has also been a runner-up at five tournaments on the surface.

1. Roger Federer – 192-29 (86.9%)

Roger Federer won 192 of his 221 matches on grass, which is more than any other man in the Open Era, and he also holds the best win percentage on his favourite surface.

The Swiss won 19 grass-court titles and eight Wimbledon crowns — both of which are men’s records — from a total of 27 finals.
