The weather forecast was always a worry for the India-Canada game, but it was the sandy outfield that proved to be the issue as there was no rain on Saturday. The damage was done by the overnight rains, leaving the groundsmen to use big hair dryers to dry the damp patches.
However, it didn't help much as the weather was still overcast and there was no sun for the ground to dry. Eventually, the umpires didn't feel the conditions were fit to play as India and Canada had to settle for a point each.
The umpires decided to abandon the match between India and Canada after an inspection at 11.30 AM local time (9 PM IST). Earlier, there were initial inspections held at 10 AM local time (7.30 PM IST) and 10.30 AM local time (8 PM IST).
With the match abandoned, India advanced to the Super Eight stage as the top team in Group A with seven points from four matches. The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated Ireland, Pakistan and the USA before their final Group A game was washed out.
On the other hand, Canada, who were already eliminated, finished their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with three points.
Earlier, the USA's match against Ireland at the same venue was also called off on Friday due to a wet outfield after unrelenting rain. The cancellation of Friday's match resulted in Pakistan being eliminated and the USA qualifying for the Super Eight stage for the first time after securing second place in the group with five points.
Notably, the weather in Florida has not been at its best for the past few days with the ground suffering the effects of heavy rainfall.
Central Broward Park is also scheduled to host the last Group A match on Sunday, with Pakistan facing Ireland. There is a forecast for rain on Sunday morning which may once again affect the cricket.
Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led India will turn their attention to the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 now where they will face Afghanistan on Thursday, June 20 at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.
