Musk Won't Say If He's Still Committed to Low-Cost Tesla EV
Max, it was interesting that, of course, his image froze up right when he's about to answer that question because Tesla omitted a previously stated goal to eventually sell 20 million vehicles a year from one of its yearly reports. And we wrote a story about that. And I want to get from you some context on how important it is that this was omitted in this latest report. Yeah. So Elon Musk the the question cut out just there, but he has a his ducked this question in earnings calls as well. And what is happening is the company has shifted. From emphasizing selling huge numbers of cars, 20 million cars. Sold a year, that would be an enormous percentage of the global auto market. You know, that's more cars that are sold every year in the United States. It really was. The original plan with Tesla was like the iPhone, like they are basically. Every car you see is going to be a Tesla, and that is how it's going to be worth a huge amount of money. And that's how Tesla is going to solve all these climate change issues. Elon Musk has shifted away from that for, for a bunch of pretty sensible reasons, essentially competition from China. It's gotten much harder to sell these cars. And so instead he's been talking a lot about robo taxis. So on the last earnings call, you know, the the idea of selling tons and tons of EVs that kind of went by the wayside. Instead, it's all about we're going to create this. Super valuable, entirely new industry that has the potential to swallow all of the transportation industry. So when you see his response there or his, you know, the, the omission of this goal in the report, that's what's going on. Essentially, we're seeing a pivot from a very large company from 1 super ambitious goal, arguably an unachievable goal to another super ambitious and arguably unachievable goal. How much do you read into this? Because Elon Musk has celebrated as he is. Says a lot of things and he's very ambitious. That's how he inspires people. But he also often changes his mind. He pivots, like you just said. So I mean, for instance, he was going to build out the Supercharger network and now he's fired almost the entire team of the Supercharger network. But actually it started, we've reported over the last week or so that he's been hiring people back. I think he's he's actually realized that shutting it down, he's re pivoted back towards superchargers. So as you say, he is a leader who kind of famously a lot of people like him because he shoots from the hip. He says what he means, he changes tack. However, this change the, the change away from the the $25,000 EV, which was a thing that. Elon Musk had talked about many of the people who Tesla were, you know, huge Tesla bulls really believed in. If you read reporting on Tesla, lots of employed people were designing this car. This is a big change. This isn't just Elon Musk, you know, waking up with a, you know, feeling differently today. It isn't like one of his tweets. It has the potential to really shift the company and shift the way people value it.
