Wayne Rooney has emerged as a strong contender to take the vacant managerial position at a Championship side.

Rooney, 38, was sacked by Birmingham City in January after just four months in charge during which the side won just two matches.

Since being relieved of his duties, the former England captain has stepped into the world of punditry, providing insight on several Premier League matches towards the end of the season.

Rooney's skills as a pundit caught the eye of the BBC and he has been confirmed as one of the company's experts for its Euro 2024 coverage.

However, according to the Telegraph, his plans may be subject to change as he has been approached for an interview for the Plymouth Argyle manager's job.

The Pilgrims have been looking for a new boss since April after they sacked Ian Foster after just three months at the helm.

It seems they are keen to bring in Manchester United's all-time top scorer, and their aspiration for his signature comes from Neil Dewsnip, the club's director of football.

After a glittering career for the likes of Everton, United, and England, Rooney turned to management in 2020,

He took charge of Derby County between 2020 and 2022, before 15 months at the helm of MLS side, D.C. United.

Then came his disastrous tenure at Birmingham City which will go down as one of the worst appointments in football history.

Rooney replaced John Eustace when Birmingham were in the play-off spots, but left them just six points above the relegation zone. The Blues went on to go down and will play League One football next season.

However, Rooney's time in the West Midlands has not disheartened him, and he is keen to return to management.

'I definitely want to get back into management,' Rooney claimed back in February.

He continued: 'It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I'm a fighter and I want to get back into it.

'You know as a manager (getting sacked) is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It's about how you bounce back. I've had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time.'

Plymouth finished just a solitary place and point above the relegation zone last season and have reportedly already interviewed Paul Heckingbottom, the former Sheffield United boss, for the role.
