Former Broncos quarterback John Elway is widely considered to be one of the best to ever play the game, spending his entire 16-year playing career in Denver.
Elway has served in various roles in the Broncos front office since his playing career ended including even the general manager for a number of years from 2011-2020.
While he is not making the football decisions in Denver anymore and his role inside the building on a day-to-day basis has been all but phased out over the last two years, the legend's words still hold a ton of weight, especially when it comes to the quarterback position.
Elway weighed in on Denver's selection of former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix, who the team used the No. 12 overall pick on following two extremely successful years at Oregon.
He said he's excited about the pick for the Broncos.
"I think it’s a great pick for the Broncos. As we talked about, he’s played a lot of football and won a lot of football games. And I’ve heard great things about him as a kid, too, so that’s an added plus," Elway told 9News in Denver.
“They had to get a quarterback and I liked Nix. The other kid I liked was the kid that went at 8, ]Michael] Penix. Obviously, I didn’t do a lot of studying on it like I would have [as Broncos’ GM]. But I watched them and both are really good players and Nix fits with what Sean likes. He’s started a lot of games, he’s athletic and makes all the throws.”
It was noted after the draft that Broncos' head coach Sean Payton was extremely high on Nix, which Elway said works in the rookie's favor tremendously.
"He’s the one that’s got to mold the clay,’’ said Elway. “Sean’s got experience doing that. He knows what he wants to do, he’s very bright offensively. If Sean likes him, it’s a good fit."
