Rishi's own goal! PM asks brewery staff in Wales 'are you looking forward to the football?' - despite their team failing to qualify for Euro 24

Rishi Sunak scored an own goal today as he asked brewery staff in Wales whether they were looking forward to the football - despite their team failing to qualify for Euro 24.

The Prime Minister at the Vale of Glamorgan Brewery in Barry was meeting workers at the Vale of Glamorgan Brewery in Barry when he asked if they were excited about the potential revenue from the tournament.

There was an awkward pause after Mr Sunak asked: 'So are you looking forward to all the football?'

One brewery employee answered: 'We're not so invested in it,' to which another responded: 'That's because you guys aren't in it'.

The Prime Minister nonetheless insisted that 'it'll be a good summer of sport'.

The self-described 'massive football fan' was in the stands to watch his home side Southampton FC qualify for the play-off finals at Wembley last week.

Mr Sunak has found the back of his own net while talking about the sport before.

In 2022, he wrongly spoke about Southampton playing Manchester United at the weekend, when they were in fact facing Leicester City.

During his brewery visit today, the teetotal Tory leader was shown brewing processes with Wales Secretary David TC Davies and Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns.

He told staff they were 'part of a proper industry that we're keen to support', mentioning a 'Brexit pubs guarantee' and support with business rates.

The stop over was part of Mr Sunak's whistlestop campaigning tour of all four nations of the UK a day after he announced a July 4 General Election.

He earlier answered questions from workers at William West Distribution in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and is heading up to Scotland later today.

Mr Sunak received a massive boost this morning after Nigel Farage declared he would not be standing on July 4.

In a bombshell move, Mr Farage insisted he wants to focus on backing Donald Trump's campaign in the US.

He said he wanted to 'do my bit to help' the party in the UK campaign but that it is not the right time 'to go any further than that'.

But sources told MailOnline that the timing of the election was the big factor in his decision, as he concluded six weeks was 'not enough' to put the work into a seat required to win.
