Sarawak to introduces prepaid wireless broadband plan, 200GB for RM5 per week

Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN), a wireless broadband service by the state government, will soon introduce a home prepaid plan which offers a generous 200GB of data for as low as RM5 per week. The plan is targeted at households residing in rural and remote areas of Sarawak.

The new service enhancement by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) is expected to launch on 7th July and users will receive 300MB of free data each month. To continue using the service, MySRBN users can pay RM5 per week for 200GB or RM20 per month for 1TB of data.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the new service is expected to enable more individuals in rural areas of Sarawak to enjoy high-speed access in line with the state government’s aspiration to create a more inclusive and digitally connected Sarawak.

He said with other service providers, users would typically have to pay a monthly fee of RM70. He added that the price difference of RM50 is subsidised by SDEC, reflecting the state government’s commitment to enhance connectivity in digital areas. Julaihi also shared that SDEC will also provide free installation of routers and antennas to approved applicants.

Launched in 2021, MySRBN is said to have expanded to cover 490 rural areas and 19,668 premises in the state. It is claimed that SDEC has received about 1,500 to 2,000 registrations each month for the service.

The installation requires an outdoor antenna unit and an indoor WiFi router unit. In terms of coverage, it is provided via the state-driven SMART towers.

When it was launched, the MySRBN service was offered free of charge until further notice. The fixed wireless broadband service provides unlimited access up to 30Mbps.

Malaysians residing in Sarawak within MySRBN coverage areas can apply for the service by downloading the MySDEC app and registering a new line. You can learn more about MySRBN on their official website.
