The Los Angeles Dodgers wrapped up a series sweep against the Chicago White Sox with a 4-0 victory at Guaranteed Rate Field on Wednesday. Gavin Stone's stellar complete-game shutout, the first by a Dodgers rookie in 11 years, was a highlight, but it wasn't the only memorable moment of the game.
Shohei Ohtani, who has been a key player for the Dodgers, set a new franchise record by securing an RBI in his 10th consecutive game. However, another incident involving Ohtani grabbed attention. During a Kiké Hernández at-bat, Dodgers bat boy Javier Herrera made a quick move to catch a foul ball that was heading towards Ohtani and bench coach Danny Lehmann in the dugout.
The video of Herrera's impressive catch quickly went viral on social media, showcasing his quick reflexes and sharp hand-eye coordination. Despite the buzz, Herrera downplayed the event, stating he was simply doing his job.
“I don’t know,” Herrera said. “I was just doing my job.”
Asked about his quick reaction time, Herrera, who is in his 18th year with the club, said, “I saw the pitch all the way through. It hit the bat, and the ball pretty much found me. I was able to grab it.”
“I saw it 100 times,” Herrera said. “It was pretty impressive. I was impressed. But in the moment, it was just like, ‘OK, let’s keep playing.’”
Ohtani has been crucial for the Dodgers, especially with Mookie Betts sidelined due to injury. Over his 10-game RBI streak, Ohtani hit .444 with eight home runs and 17 RBIs, making a strong case for National League Player of the Month for June.
While Herrera's catch won't appear in the scorebook, it might be one of the most significant plays by a Dodgers team member this season. The reactions from the dugout ranged from impressed to relieved, highlighting the importance of the moment.
