Throwback: When Karan Johar admitted that ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hain’ was problematic
Karan Johar is an exceptional director, with films like K3G, My Name Is Khan, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kaahani and many more under his name. But perhaps the most iconic is Kuch Kuch Hota Hain which was his debut as his director. The film marked KJO’s remarkable career’s start and the film is still iconic to this day, even after its release in 1998.
However, as years passed, the film started to get criticism for portraying toxic masculinity and diminished female representation, which sparked discussions among the fans. Karan Johar also acknowledged the problematic nature of the film after he received criticism from veteran Shabana Azmi.
During the Indian Film Festival in 2019 at Melbourne, Karan admitted to the film’s mistaken portrayal of characters and ideologies.
He had recounted an instance when Shabana Azmi revealed her criticism towards the film after watching the film.
“KKHH is the most politically incorrect film”, Karan shared narrating Azmi’s reaction to the film. She questioned the stereotypical depiction that correlated a girl’s attractiveness to the length of her hair, which prompted Karan to acknowledge her critique and Karan said that he knows that she is right.
The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherji in lead roles, along with the debut of Sana Saeed as a child and Salman Khan’s special appearance. The film also had Anupam Kher and Archana Puran Singh in key roles.
