New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP and former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal wrote a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, alleging that his government has been “systematically dismantling” the DCW since her resignation as Chairperson in January 2024.

In her letter to Kejriwal, Maliwal claimed that the government has "destroyed" the systems she built since 2015. She pointed out the current challenges faced by the DCW, including "arbitrary budget cuts for the commission."

“...The treatment meted out to the Commission post my resignation is extremely disheartening. Some of the challenges faced by the Commission include Arbitrary takeover of the 181 Women Helpline, Cessation of funds to the Commission, Arbitrary budget cut for the Commission, Removal of staff of the Commission, and Vacancies in leadership roles.”

She further wrote, “As the Chief Minister of a city infamous as the 'Rape Capital of the World,' it is crucial to safeguard systems that protect women and girls…I implore you to intervene immediately and urge the Delhi Government Ministers to uphold their responsibilities towards the women and children of the capital.”

This comes amid Maliwal's case against Delhi CM’s aide Bibhav Kumar, in which she alleged physical assault at the CM's residence. Kumar was arrested on May 18 and has been in police custody since then.

The Delhi High Court on Monday ruled that the plea filed by Bibhav Kumar challenging his arrest in the alleged Swati Maliwal assault case is maintainable. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued a notice to the Delhi Police after pronouncing the order.
