Refresh for latest…: Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One not only set a domestic opening record for the franchise, it also did it at the international box office. Of the $98.5M global start, $45.5M is from 59 overseas markets, well exceeding expectations.

Overall, on a like-for-like basis, the offshore result on AQPD1 is 4% above A Quiet Place: Part II. When excluding China, it’s 20% higher.

China was the lead market at $9.8M, landing No. 3 behind a local title and the continued strong run of Inside Out 2. Mexico was a $4.7M start at No. 2 for the biggest opening weekend in the franchise and the best for a Paramount horror movie. The UK scared up $3.9M at No. 2; Australia opened to $2.6M and Korea to $2.5M.

Elsewhere, France’s $1.9M was the best for the franchise; as was Indonesia with $1.7M. Brazil’s $1.7M likewise scored the top for the series and is Paramount’s best start for a horror title.

Markets yet to open include Argentina, Chile, Finland and South Africa.

In Imax, the film delivered $9.3M global including $3.5M from overseas markets.

What a nice salve this weekend has been with so many pictures firing… To wit:

As previously noted (see story here), Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 crossed the $1B mark globally this frame, and was the biggest movie internationally this weekend with an additional $108M. The worldwide cume is $1,014.8B which includes $545.5M from overseas. It is currently the No. 18 animated film ever at the international box office, and the highest grosser of the year. Still to come on IO2 is Japan on August 1.

Outside studio movies, India’s Kalki 2989 AD got off to a rip-roaring start with an estimated $56M global per our sources. We’ll have more to come on this one.

Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 continued its early staggered overseas release with an additional $13.9M from 20 markets. The running offshore cume is $25.3M.

Chile opened No.1 with $2.5M across 290 screens; after just three days in release, DM4 became the biggest opening weekend of the DM/Minions Universe, and was in line with Super Mario. DM4‘s opening there is the 4th biggest studio animated opening of all time. On launch day, it scored the biggest Universal start ever in monetary terms and 3rd for admissions, only behind Fast 8 and Fast 7. It was also the biggest opening day ever for an Illumination title. The market is heading into two weeks of winter vacations.

Colombia opened across 520 screens, reaching $1.7M in line with Despicable Me 3 and well above Despicable Me 2. On opening day, DM4 claimed the biggest opening day of the Despicable Me franchise and the second biggest opening day of the Despicable Me/Minions Universe only behind Minions. DM4 opens into what has historically been one of the best weekends of the year, and will play into school holidays and a national holiday on Monday.

Israel offered up $900K across 100 screens, at No.1 in the market, above all other titles in the series and the 2nd biggest opening weekend of 2024.

Hong Kong opened with $900K across 73 screens this weekend, launching on a non-standard Saturday to capitalize on the Establishment Day public holiday. Saturday grossed $400K, the biggest opening day for a Hollywood title in 2024.

Other strong starts were seen in Portugal ($500K at No. 1) and South Africa ($400K at No.1 and during what is on track to be the biggest weekend overall in the market since Barbenheimer).

In holds, Australia  was down just 22%. With a $9.75M cume to date, DM4 has surpassed the lifetimes of Paddington, Paddington 2, Maleficent 2, Cruella and Wish.

Oz is the top market to date for the fourquel, followed by Argentina at $5.2M. There are many majors to come with releases next weekend in Spain, Mexico and Brazil alongside domestic. Beyond that, France, Germany, China, UK, Japan, Korea and Italy are still on deck.

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die topped $300M globally during the week and now counts $332M worldwide. A $13.1M international box office weekend lifts the offshore cume to $166.7M from 66 markets.

Tops to date are Saudi Arabia ($18M), Mexico ($13.9M), UK ($13M), UAE ($9.2M) and Germany ($9.1M).
