The Los Angeles Chargers have managed a smooth offseason regarding contract negotiations. No players held out during OTAs, and it seems unlikely anyone will hold out during training camp. Early in the offseason, the Chargers focused on clearing cap space and addressing four significant contracts involving Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Khalil Mack, and Joey Bosa. The team traded Allen, released Williams, and restructured deals with Mack and Bosa.
With quarterback Justin Herbert's record-breaking extension secured last offseason, the Chargers are now looking ahead toextending offensive tackle Rashawn Slater. The team exercised Slater's fifth-year option earlier this offseason, keeping him under contract through the 2025 season. While there's no immediate rush, a long-term deal for Slater is expected either this offseason or the next.
Slater, already a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro, is considered one of the top offensive linemen in the league. When his extension is finalized, he is expected to command a significant salary. Currently, the highest-paid offensive lineman is Detroit Lions' OT Penei Sewell, earning an average of $28 million per year. Only one other offensive lineman, from the Houston Texans, makes $25 million annually, with six others earning at least $20 million per year.
As Slater enters his fourth season, he has the potential to become the second offensive lineman to earn over $25 million per year, possibly even resetting the market. Another strong season could solidify his position as one of the highest-paid players at his position.
