Corrie: Vicky Myers reveals what's next for DS Lisa Swain

Oh, it's, it's wonderful and it's, it's genuinely heartwarming. The messages that I've received, the, the letters, I've been really fortunate that I've received friendship bracelets and people have taken the care and attention. Somebody from Ireland, a young woman called Katie made me a friendship bracelet with the DS Wayne on it. And also people have shared their stories and have also thanked me for representing a professional female in this this iconic stream and part of the LGBTQ plus community. So and that is something I am hugely privileged to portray. And it is an honour as well. And it is one that I don't take lightly or or frivolously, you know, it's with that comes a responsibility. So, and I'm well aware of that and I hope that I'm really portraying with justice actually. And that's, that was massive. So when I read that episode of when she she finally obviously opened up and became vulnerable in the car with Carla, it's it's huge and it, it meant a great deal to me as well. I knew that that's what happened to a partner, but also to see that dynamic and how it's affected the relationship with with Lisa and her daughter Betsy, because during that time, Lisa went straight back to work. And it's interesting because I listened to Jill Halfpenny talk about bereavement in at wings hour and she was saying that very much for that period of time for her, her bereavement, the grief was her driver. And I thought, well, that's, that's it. That was how it was for Lisa. So her way of dealing with it was to go straight back to work and in doing so, inadvertently pushed Betsy away. And Betsy would have been, you know, sort of in really teens at the time. So it's a formative years and her mum really wasn't there in many ways. So with that, there's also that fear for Betsy as well, that her mum's going out to do this job where her other mother was, you know, horrendously killed on duty. So there's a lot to unpack. There's a lot of fear, there's a lot of angst and but it's all surrounded with love. They, they deeply love each other. Obviously the mother and daughter, but they're petrified of losing each other. So with that, they clash because they built up this, this protective wall, this mechanism. So I mean, there's so much there to to explore and I really hope that we're given the opportunity to do that. And obviously to work with, with Sydney is, is incredible. She's, she's a beautiful woman on and off screen and she's so incredibly talented. So I am, I am overjoyed that that she has been cast as Swain's daughter. Well, yeah, because she's she's extremely busy, Lisa, and she is career driven. But also there's that there's that love in the relationship between the two. But the fact that Betsy feels that she is worldly wise, she knows it all is. I mean, who didn't at the age of 16? And she knows full well from her own experience of being 16, if you tell her to do something or not to do something, she's more likely to go ahead and do it because she's headstrong, she's opinionated, she's intelligent and she's she's not remotely fazed about voicing her opinions. But she too, is vulnerable. She's young, so Lisa's trying to juggle everything that she can to put food on the table. A single working mum. They're both coming to terms with the grief of losing, obviously Lisa losing her, her beloved wife, and then Betsy losing her other mother. It's, it's tricky, it's complicated, but I, I don't think the apple falls off from the tree where they're both concerned. So they crash a lot for now with, with everything that's happening in the street and obviously with the episodes that, that you've, that you've just watched, Lisa's incredibly busy. But I do feel that it will be really quite lovely for her to have a a friend and to develop a friendship with, with somebody because she doesn't trust many people for obvious reasons. And she's fiercely protective of anybody coming into that family dynamic. And I feel with Carla, with that vulnerability, Carla was also vulnerable and she shared, you know, her experience in life, her bereavement with Liam. And also she knew about Peter because she was dealing with the Stephen storyline this year. So she knew about Peter anyway. And also she she sees a lot of herself and Carla, she respects her and she is a feisty, strong, she's a powerhouse, but also she has a big heart. She's seen how the relationship is between her and Roy, how she cares for those who, you know, sort of Bobby and Ryan who live with her. And also, she's offered the hands to Betsy to say, you know, she's struggling and and give us some work at the factory. So she sees that in her. So with that, she feels that she can perhaps be a bit more comfortable. Plus she drinks red wine. So I mean, so who knows? I think that would be really nice to see their friendship develop or or a friendship in general for Lisa. I think she needs it. I think she needs that somebody to talk to instead of trying to just do it all by herself. Yeah, I I think that would be great. And then I I could only begin to imagine how Lisa would feel about that. With Joel being in a position of trust in a similar profession. His that abuse of trust, that abuse of power, targeting vulnerable women, including her own daughter. She would be fierce with that and, and not solely for the vulnerable young women he's groomed, but also for the women. He's a beautiful stop. There's DD, there's Emily, there's, there's a whole host of women. And I feel that that female empowerment, the rise up for man and the unity that that that will bring would be terrific. And for him to get his comeuppance, either each individually or collectively. But yeah, it's, it's, I'm really looking forward to it. And it sounds ridiculous considering, you know, sort of the, the nature of the storyline, but I'm really looking forward to it. And also betraying with, with grooming that a lot of, of vulnerable young people who are being groomed, they don't necessarily realise that that's what it is. So with this, I think credits Coronation Street and the the, the Maggie Oliver Foundation for highlighting this and the script writers and researchers for doing it so impeccably well that this will absolutely raise awareness and hopefully even just one person can can watch it and unfortunately relate to what's going on. Then they know the signposts and people that that are there to help and that they will be believed and that they are seen. Hope hopefully I really do, you know, and that that's it's, it's really emotional and and people get passionate about this and making sure that that we really do it justice. And it is to educate and to make people aware. And also with people that were perhaps victims years ago, that it would help them come to terms with that and realise that they can be seen. They will be listened to, they will be believed, and that they matter, you know?
