Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Sequel Character Wish List
- A potential Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sequel could add new characters, with indie games and crossovers being possibilities.
- Characters like Isaac from Golden Sun, Impa from Zelda, and Meowscarada from Pokemon could further represent Nintendo history.
- Third-party characters like Dante from Devil May Cry can continue the series' growth as an industry-wide project.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a defining title of the Nintendo Switch. The platform fighter sported the largest roster in the series, with nearly ninety playable characters to choose from. With so much content, it's almost hard to imagine where the series could go from here. However, a potential sequel to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate could find its edge with a few choice additions to the roster.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 seemingly on the way, a new Smash Bros. game may come sometime after. Smash Bros. Ultimate marketed itself on the simple slogan: "Everyone is Here". Every character who had made an appearance in the series' history returned for Ultimate, which leaves a lot of room to look forward to what new characters may make it into a sequel.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's all-encompassing approach to the franchise makes a sequel tough to design, but a new game could still be refreshing.
Smash Bros. Ultimate Sequel Newcomer Wish List
The complex issues of licensing and limited developer time make it unlikely that a Smash Ultimate sequel will see every character return once again. Compared to previous Smash games, Ultimate added relatively few new characters at launch, though this was mostly remedied through the game's ongoing DLC.
With the precedent that Smash Ultimate set, its sequel will be working in a pretty interesting state regarding new fighters. In fact, the inclusion of new characters may be more important than ever. Though the game's roster may or may not end up smaller than its predecessor, there are a few characters that could really shine in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sequel.
Smash Bros. Ultimate Sequel Can Add Nintendo Mainstays
Golden Sun may not receive a lot of love when it comes to new games, but a Smash crossover is the perfect place to heal that wound. Isaac is the main protagonist of the classic RPG series Golden Sun, and he certainly has a strong case for inclusion in Smash. First and foremost, his use of magic and summoning would ensure that his moveset is wholly unique from other sword-fighting characters. Finally, he is already an Assist Trophy, so upgrading him to a playable fighter is bound to create some buzz.
If there's one Nintendo series that needs a shakeup in representation, it's Zelda. Currently, the only Zelda characters featured in Smash Bros. are three Links, Ganondorf, Zelda, and Zelda's alter ego Sheik. One problem with including new Zelda characters is the small number of recurring characters within the Zelda series itself. Impa sidesteps this problem completely, as one of the few characters to find her way into multiple eras. Furthermore, she could bring a unique fighting style thanks to her design from Hyrule Warriors.
Pokemon has one of the largest number of characters in the series, but this doesn't bar it from receiving new fighters. In fact, Smash Bros. has yet to feature a fully evolved Grass Type Starter. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Meowscarada is the perfect Pokemon to remedy this, brimming with more than enough personality to feel at home in the Smash Bros. series.
Smash Bros. Ultimate Sequel Crossover Characters
Smash Bros. Ultimate, despite the titanic size of its roster, had a surprisingly small number of Capcom representatives. Among the many possibilities, featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series is definitely the most exciting option for a Smash Bros. sequel. Dante wields a vast arsenal at his fingertips, and his status as the protagonist of a character action game means he's bound to have a fluid fighting style.
Sonic is another series that could expand its representation, thanks to the titular hedgehog being all by himself. There are plenty of viable options, but Shadow the Hedgehog is certainly the most deserving. It already came as a surprise that he was relegated to being an Assist Trophy yet again despite Smash Bros. Ultimate introducing the concept of Echo Fighters. Sonic provides a strong base for Shadow to build on, and the latter has plenty of unique qualities to build out his own identity.
Smash Bros. Ultimate made huge leaps for indie representation, and a sequel could take this one step further. Though characters like Cuphead and Sans later received Mii Costumes, Shovel Knight was in Smash Bros. Ultimate from the get-go. Though plenty of other Assist Trophies could receive an upgrade, Shovel Knight would undoubtedly be the most exciting for what it means for indie games. Although it's a long shot, it wouldn't be Shovel Knight's first appearance in a platform fighter, so there's plenty of precedent for a moveset.
The next game in the Super Smash Bros. series could take any number of directions regarding its roster of characters. However, a healthy mix of first and third party characters is bound to introduce new and unique designs to the series. Prioritizing such characters would be a nice direction for the series to take after Ultimate's gargantuan roster.
