Minnesota Vikings defender makes preseason all rookie team

When the Minnesota Vikings moved up to select Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner, it created a lot of discussion. That discussion wasn't focused on the player but the draft capital moved to go and select him.

That conversation was a frustrating one for many reasons, mainly due to the argument being presented in an unfair way from the start. Now that training camp is coming up, the narrative has finally shifted to being about what the player can be.

Turner isn't just a talented edge rusher that the Vikings got as a value, he is also the leader in Defensive Rookie of the Year odds. He is also one of two edge rushers on the projected all-rookie team from NFL.com's Chad Reuter.

I suspect Turner will be a defensive force for the Vikings by the midway point of his rookie campaign, possibly starting the year as a designated pass rusher (and ultimately approaching a double-digit sack total) but eventually proving he’s able to drop into zones and fight tackles playing the run.

The last line is what will separate Turner from other edge rushers. His fluidity in space is truly special. Against Tennessee this past season, Turner flipped his hips on a dime to follow the running back in pass coverage.

That type of versatility is key for Flores' defense. He likes to be both versatile and multiple in his looks and personnel groups. It keeps the offense guessing and thinking, which can lead to big plays for the defense. Turner could see the field a lot early on, especially with Andrew Van Ginkel still recovering from a foot injury he suffered at the end of the 2023 season.

If Turner takes off like some think he could, watch out.
