Martin Mull, renowned actor and comedian known for "Roseanne" and "Arrested Development," passes away at 80
SANTA MONICA, CA - SEPTEMBER 09: Actors Giovanni Ribisi (L) and Martin Mull arrive at the Fox Fall Eco-Casino Party at The Bungalow on September 9, 2013 in Santa Monica, California.
ALBAWABA - Martin Mull has passed away, according to his daughter. He was a renowned guest performer on comedies like "Roseanne" and "Arrested Development" and was famous for his dry, esoteric humor and acting in the 1970s. He was a hundred years old.
After "a valiant fight against a long illness," TV writer and comic artist Maggie Mull, who is also Mull's daughter, announced her father's death at home on Thursday.
Norman Lear's satirical serial series "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" propelled musician and painter Mull to national stardom with her recurring role and her lead role in its spinoff, "Fernwood Tonight."
In an Instagram post, Maggie Mull said that he was well-known for his exceptional talent in several creative fields, including ads for Red Roof Inn. I bet he thought the joke was hilarious. Never once was he unfunny. Countless pets, along with his wife and daughter, friends, colleagues, fellow artists, comedians, and musicians, and, most importantly, my dad's wife and kid, will miss him dearly.
Beginning his career in show business as a composer, he wrote Jane Morgan's "A Girl Named Johnny Cash," a semi-hit in 1970.
He would perform at trendy Hollywood clubs in the 1970s as part of an act that fused music and humor.
In 1980, Mull told The Associated Press that he was performing as a guitarist and sit-down comedian at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip in 1976 when Norman Lear happened to stroll in and overhear him. On "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman," he portrayed me as the husband who beats his wife. Four months later, he assigned me my own program.
Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, and the Riders of the Purple Sage all pay tribute to him in the 1973 country rock classic "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy," which commemorates his time on the Strip.
