‘He should be banned!’ - Torres amazed by Yamal
Ferran Torres has joked that Lamine Yamal “should be banned” as the youngster continues to wow the football world at Euro 2024.
Still just 16, Yamal has emerged as a key player for club and country this season, leaving Torres pretty amazed by his team-mate’s extraordinary talent.
Asked in an interview by the Guardian what he thought about Yamal, Torres responded with a smile: “That he should be banned. What this kid is doing at 16 years of age!”
Torres also went on to speak about his international form after his goal last time out against Albania means he now has 20 in just 44 appearances for La Roka.
“I score with my club too – my numbers are there – but there’s something about putting this shirt on, something inside. I’ve been with the national team at youth level and there’s a pride,” he added.
“This is more than a team, our strength is the group. You have to make the most of the minutes you get; make them count and you’ll get more. For a forward, it’s important to score, to say: ‘I’m here, I’m ready.”
Torres also spoke about Spain’s form in general. Luis de la Fuente’s team have looked the pick of the bunch so far at Euro 2024, and Torres was asked why.
“Maybe we’re more direct that before; we don’t have so much possession. Maybe it’s a little freer. Every coach has his nuance. But more than a style, what you see is that we are friends on the pitch,” he said.
“You see the energy, the connection, the atmosphere: everyone is totally involved. You see us train and it flows. Above all, you feel empathy, synergy. There’s no rivalry; there’s competitiveness, but not rivalry. Of course we all want to play but it’s healthy and that’s super-important.”
Spain are back in action at the tournament on Sunday when they take on Georgia for a place in the quarter-finals in Germany.
