Dua Lipa Glastonbury set hit with sound issues - including during duet with surprise guest star

Dua Lipa struggled with a few sound issues during her headline set at Glastonbury Festival, leaving fans watching at home on the BBC divided as they tuned into her 'dream come true' set.

The award-winning singer, who was reportedly paid an eye-watering sum for her headline set, grew emotional at times during her performance - telling the the crowd how she "manifested this moment" and performing on the Pyramid stage was "a dream come true."

The Don't Start Now singer, 28, brought her all on Friday night as she performed some of her biggest hits such as Levitating, Pretty Please and more. She surprised fans by inviting Tame Impala star Kevin Parker onto the Pyramid Stage to perform his iconic song, The Less I Know The Better.

However, throughout her set, she had a few sound issues as viewers at home took to social media to complain about technical issues. One fan in the crowd even told the Mirror how “a very loud sound overlapped from another stage” was creating a dull bass thud.

On Twitter (X), one viewer watching at home has said: “Can someone please turn Dua Lipa’s mic up? Can hardly hear her! Every year the sound is terrible! #Glastonbury #Glastonbury2024.” Another moaned: “The sound on the BBC stream of #Glastonbury is… weird. This Dua set just sounds flat. #DuaLipa.”

One said: "Dua Lipa - either she’s miming or they’ve got the sound mix horribly wrong. It just sounds off." Tame Impala's Kevin also had sound issues but Dua didn't seem to mind as she laughed off the incident and continued with singing The Less I Know The Better with him.

Introducing him, Dua said: "This is a person who I admire and who I asked to work with on my album Radical Optimism. Tonight I get to pretend to be in Tame Impala.... please welcome Kevin Parker." Speaking to the crowd on Friday night, Dua said she had dreamed about headlining Glastonbury Festival 'her whole life' before she kicked off her Pyramid stage slot.

The star, who also sand New Rules, told the crowd: “I can’t believe this, I’ve dreamed about this my whole life. And I can’t believe I’m right up here, right here, with you guys, I am so happy to be here with you guys tonight." Her set included the iconic summer song, One Kiss, by Calvin Harris.

Dua was also hit with miming accusations over on Twitter (X). Viewers tuning in from home were left questioning the authenticity of her performance as debates erupted on Twitter over whether Dua was lip-syncing. Tweets poured in with comments such as: "Dua Lipa is 100% miming #Glastonbury", "Is Dua Lipa...miming? #Glastonbury", and "What a shame #Glastonbury has a headline act on that's obviously miming her vocals", while others questioned, "Is she miming? #Glastonbury" and "Is she actually miming? #Glastonbury.."

However, a number of viewers quickly defended the singer, insisting that she was indeed performing live. One person tweeted: "Why are people in this thread saying she's miming? Looks like she's singing live to me #Glastonbury", a different user affirmed: "No Dua Lipa is not miming. Majority of the main vocal parts are quite clearly live. She's smashing it and everyone on stage look like they're having the time of their lives. #Glastonbury", and another contributed: "All these haters saying she's miming... are you b****y stupid? ? ? ? She's clearly not! She's killing it #DuaLipa #Glastonbury #Glastonbury2024". Additionally, a different fan penned: "Dua is clearly not miming so I don't know why people are saying it."

The pop superstar opened her first headline performance at the British festival with impressive choreography to her hit track Training Season from her third studio album, Radical Optimism, which was released earlier this year. The 28-year-old told the crowd: “I can’t believe this, I’ve dreamed about this my whole life. And I can’t believe I’m right up here, right here, with you guys, I am so happy to be here with you guys tonight.”

During her performance, the audience could be heard singing loudly along to the words of her 2018 track One Kiss with Calvin Harris, and the song that “changed my life” Be The One. The pop star stood on the barrier separating the crowd from the stage as the audience helped her sing parts of the song.

Meanwhile, during her 2020 hit song Levitating, the singer asked the crowd if they were ready “to go to the moon”. The headline set also saw her bring out surprise guest Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, performing The Less I Know The Better from the group’s repertoire. Parker appeared to have problems with his microphone, which Dua Lipa laughed off.

Later in the performance, Dua Lipa asked for the house lights to be turned on so she could see the audience. “This is a massive dream come true for me, I have written this moment down, I’ve wished for it, I’ve dreamt, I’ve worked so hard in the hopes that maybe one day I’ll get to do it and I can’t believe I’m here, it feels so good to be up here with you guys,” she said.

“You know when I wrote it down, I was very specific, I said I really wanted to headline the Pyramid Stage on a Friday night because then I knew I could party for the next two days in the best place on Earth. “I’m so grateful, little me would just be beside herself right now.”

Dua, who took home the Brit Award for best pop act in March, treated revellers to a selection of her hit songs, including Illusion, These Walls, Break My Heart, Love Again, Hallucinate and Electricity. During 2018’s New Rules, the singer asked the audience to get to the floor before jumping in the air and dancing to the track.

It comes after Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis said the pop star was “born” to headline the festival. Earlier on the Pyramid stage on Friday, Paul Heaton and Norman Cook reunited to perform a Housemartins classic at Glastonbury. Heaton surprised festival-goers by bringing out his former bandmate Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, to perform their 1986 hit Happy Hour.
