New Lions CB Carlton Davis III among best tight-coverage corners in NFL
Opinions varied widely this spring after the Detroit Lions acquired cornerback Carlton Davis III and to late-round draft picks from Tampa Bay for a third-round draft pick.
While the veteran has had troubles with injuries in the past — he’s averaged fewer than 13 games per season in his six-year career — he’s been quite good when healthy.
Last season, Davis was ranked ninth in the NFL in tight coverage rate (29.7%), according to Pro Football Focus. Detroit’s highest tight coverage rate last season belonged to Jerry Jacobs, whose 20.7% rate was 39th in the league.
Davis also didn’t allow a touchdown in man coverage last season and only gave up a 60% completion percentage, PFF adds. That was despite him receiving his worst defensive grade from PFF since his rookie season.
Of course, the Lions also added Amik Robertson and drafted Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in an effort to improve its pass defense this season.
The Lions had the second-best run defense in the NFL last season but got shredded through the air, ranking 27th.
Davis alone, if healthy, should make a big impact alone, but if the other newcomers can provide any lift and second-year man Brian Branch gets a bigger role, Detroit’s defense could make a big leap this season.
That'd be huge for a team with championship aspirations and well worth a third-round pick.
