Who is Miles Russell? Meet the 15-year-old golfer who impressed at his first PGA Tour start

The Rocket Mortgage Classic saw plenty of low-scoring golfers over its first two days. Akshay Bhatia was 13-under through two rounds while other golfers like Troy Merritt, Taylor Montgomery, Cam Davis and Eric Cole were all more than 10 strokes under par as well.

Still, fans at Detroit Golf Club were more interested in a golfer who finished his first two rounds at even par, Miles Russell.

Golf fans had a good reason to be interested in Russell. The 15-year-old was making his first-ever PGA Tour start after becoming the youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour in April.

Could Russell continue to show his magic touch and earn a chance to play the weekend? It wouldn't be easy for the young golfer, even with scoring conditions favorable at Detroit Golf Club. That's why so many golf fans tuned in to see exactly what the rising star could do.

Ultimately, Russell wasn't able to make the cut. Still, he made plenty of highlights and put himself on the map as a potential future PGA Tour contender.

Here's what to know about Russell after his appearance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Who is Miles Russell?

Russell is a 15-year-old golfer who made his PGA Tour debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Russell drew into the field as a sponsor's exemption after his strong showing at the Suncoast Classic. The lefthander became the youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour en route to a 14-under finish and a tie for 20th place.

Russell has been reminded of his age in several different ways at Detroit Golf Club this week. He wasn't able to provide the courtesy car given to him by the PGA Tour for the week, and he technically wasn't permitted to use the men's member locker room, which is reserved for golfers 16 or older.

The venue made an exception for Russell, who showed well over 36 holes at the club. He drove his first ball 305 yards down the middle of the fairway and shook off some nervy moments to finish his first day at 2 over.

"Should have been nervous all day," Russell said of his first round, per ESPN. "It was a good day, settled in nicely."

Russell responded with a 2 under on his second day at the tournament. At one point, he pushed his round as low as 4 under, which put him within striking distance of the cut line.

Ultimately, he couldn't get over the hump to make it to the weekend, but the 15-year-old should be plenty proud of his even-par debut on the PGA Tour.

Miles Russell highlights at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Russell had plenty of memorable moments at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Here he is on the tournament's second day, chipping in from off the green to move within striking distance of the cut line.

Russell also hit a near-perfect bunker shot to set himself up with a tap-in birdie putt earlier in the round.

His first approach shot of the day was pretty good too, as he set himself up with a short birdie putt to begin his second-day run.

And, of course, here's how he set up his first-ever PGA Tour birdie at Detroit Golf Club.

Russell may not have made the cut, but he showcased his talent and proved he can eventually be a star on the PGA Tour. It shouldn't be too long before he earns a second start on the PGA Tour, especially if he continues to grow and improve.
