Tyler Glasnow's command escaped him on Saturday

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored the most runs in an extra inning before recording their first out since 1966. The 11th inning explosion obviously represented a massive positive for the team as they forced a rubber match in San Francisco on Sunday.

But part of the reason the game had even reached that point was due to an early hole in which they found themselves on the heels of Tyler Glasnow's worst start of the season.

In his shortest start of the year, Glasnow allowed five earned runs across just three innings of work. He allowed seven hits, two walks, and only struck out one hitter.

It was clear from the jump that Glasnow never had it on Saturday. He allowed the leadoff man to reach base in each inning, with four of his seven hits allowed going for extra bases. Worse yet, he didn't record a single called strike on the fastball, finishing with a CSW% that ranked nearly 10 points below his season average (21). His slider generated whiffs at a rate 10 percent below his season average as well.

Glasnow's first strike percentage (52.9) also sat almost 14 points below his season average, while whiffs were down. The Giants were aggressive against him, swinging at almost 76 percent of pitches inside the strike zone, while generating a fair bit of hard contact as a result. None of it appeared to be working for him on Saturday.

Even in some of his poorer starts this year, Glasnow was able to generate strikeouts in order to work a bit deeper into the game. This includes June 9th against the Yankees, where he struck out a dozen hitters while allowing five earned, and May 16th against the Reds, when he K'd nine while allowing four earned.

This time out, Glasnow couldn't lean on that element of his skill set. While the Dodgers were able to overcome it in the later stages of Saturday's game, it disrupts the momentum Glasnow had built through his last two starts, where he struck out 19 and allowed a single earned run in 14 innings. The lack of getting ahead with the four-seam and generating whiffs with the slider was a notable factor in his struggles on Saturday.

As of now, his next start is projected to take place against the Milwaukee Brewers next weekend. Glasnow hasn't started a game against the Crew since 2017, with a 6.14 ERA in six overall appearances against them. He hasn't faced them since his days in Pittsburgh, however.

It'll be interesting to see how the Brewers approach Glasnow coming off this start. Milwaukee and San Francisco sport almost identical swing rates as a team, with the Brewers walking more than anyone outside of the Yankees & Dodgers. The Giants came out much more aggressive against him, however. The Brewers have been a bit more prone to strikeouts & groundballs than San Francisco has proven to be, so there is a chance he can take advantage of that patience with some aggressiveness of his own.
