At 38-44, the Blue Jays remain dead last in the AL East while with the Yankees’ loss yesterday, they fall one game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the division lead. It will be an exciting battle between the team aces on Sunday as the Blue Jays look for their first series win in two weeks.

Probable pitchers

The Blue Jays will have 2023 AL Cy Young finalist Kevin Gausman on the mound in the series finale. Gausman has had a bumpy 2024 season to date, as he sported a 6-6 record with a 4.26 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, with 84 strikeouts in 86.2 innings pitched over 16 starts. He has given up five or more runs five times this year already, including once against the Yankees back on April 6. At the same time, he has also yielded just one earned run or less in seven other occasions, showing the inconsistency that has plagued him so far this year. Gausman will be looking for his seventh win of the season on Sunday.

The Yankees will counter with last season’s AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole. Cole had been sidelined for the bulk of this year due to nerve irritation and edema in his right pitching elbow. He recently returned to action in mid-June and has had two sub-par starts in which he gave up 8 runs on 10 hits with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts in just 8 innings of work in total. Cole will be looking for his first win of the season to help the Yankees salvage a series split against the Jays.
