Philippines, Australia swap intel vs terrorism, human smuggling

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) and Australia’s Department of Home Affairs (DHA) recently signed an agreement to exchange intelligence to boost border security capabilities against terrorism and human smuggling.

The BI and DHA would cooperate in migration management and border control, streamlining procedures to encourage legitimate travel and implementing safeguards against illegal migration.

“This agreement marks a pivotal moment in our bilateral relations. By working closely with the Australian government, we are strengthening our commitment to better migration management and regional security,” Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said.

“Our collaboration will help deter terrorists, combat smuggling and address transnational crimes,” Tansingco added.

The agreement is part of the Philippines-Australia Plan of Action 2023-2026, which supports the joint declaration signed on Sept. 8, 2023 by President Marcos and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Exchange of intelligence would include operating procedures, transit routes and travel modes.

“This agreement sets the stage for cooperation in identifying, preventing and prosecuting organizers of trafficking and escorts of irregular migrants,” Tansingco said.

Meanwhile, the Canada Border Services Agency trained 36 BI personnel in impostor detection and passenger assessment at the Davao International Airport on June 27.
