Everything you need to know about Richard Gadd's first TV show after Baby Reindeer

Richard Gadd’s former life of pulling pints at The Hawley Arms is firmly behind him after his debut TV show Baby Reindeer became a worldwide phenomenon.

The series centres on Gadd’s character, struggling comedian Donny, who is stalked by a woman named Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning) after he serves her a cup of tea in the pub where he works.

Since the eight-parter’s release on Netflix, it has barely been out of the headlines particularly as the show’s real-life drama rumbles on after Fiona Harvey claimed she was the inspiration behind Martha and gave an explosive interview to Piers Morgan.

She is now suing the global streaming platform for $170,000,000 (£132,000,000) for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and violations of her right of publicity.

Meanwhile, Gadd, who has not directly addressed the scandal, has been cementing his position in the A-List, including signing with a US mega agent, and now has embarked on his next TV project.

The 35-year-old’s new show is a drama called Lions about two estranged brothers who reunite – and it is being co-produced by the BBC and HBO.

According to HBO, the synopsis is: ‘When Niall’s estranged “brother” Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives.

‘Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way.

‘It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?’

Somewhere Boys and Rivals’ Alexandra Brodski and Cheyenne & Lola’s Eshref Reybrouck are attracted to direct the series.

The casting has yet to be announced.

Speaking about Lions, Gadd said: ‘Ordering a HBO boxset of The Sopranos, The Wire, or Oz and watching it from start to finish were some of the happiest moments of my childhood.

‘Since then, it has always been a dream of mine to work with HBO and be part of their iconic roster of shows.

‘I am so grateful to Francesca Orsi, Kara Buckley and Clint LaVigne for taking this chance on the show and on Ruben and Niall too who – despite growing up in a dead-end Scottish town – would be absolutely pinching themselves at this! I cannot wait to get started.’

Lions will be coming to BBC and BBC iPlayer.
