England WAGs caught up in angry fan revolt against Gareth Southgate as UEFA consider ban

The WAGs and families of England's players were drenched in beer as fans expressed their frustration with the Three Lions' performance against Slovenia on Tuesday night.

Some supporters threw beer cups and yelled abuse towards manager Gareth Southgate following the 0-0 draw, with several players' family members caught up in the incident - and they were showered in beer. It is understood that WAGs, family members and loved ones were caught in the disgraceful scenes after the England boss went over to the fans at the end of the game.

While some family members - who were not targeted but witnessed it all - sat opposite the tunnel area in a general admission area, others were drenched in beer as cups rained down from above. When asked about the reaction of the angry fans, Southgate said: "I understand it.

"I'm not going to back away from it. The most important thing is the supporters stay with the team. I understand the narrative towards me and that's better for the team than it being towards them.

"But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I've not seen any other team qualify and receive similar. They (England's players) kept composure in a game where they've come into a really challenging environment.

"Of course, we'd love a couple of goals that sends everybody home happy. But we were definitely an improvement on what we did in the last game. I think the changes we made had a positive effect on the game tonight.

"We weren't able to find the right pass, the final finish. But we are improving. I don't think we were suddenly going to be free and liberated and stick four or five goals in. Football doesn't work that way. I saw progress. The goals will come."

England fans cheered on their side against Slovenia on Tuesday night

Current rules in Germany allows football fans to drink alcohol in the stands during Euro 2024. That is not applied in top-level English football, with Premier League and EFL fans only allowed to buy and drink alcohol in the concourses at football stadiums.

But according to reports, UEFA could ban Euros matchgoers from drinking in the stands following a series of incidents involving supporters throwing beer cups. As well as England, Croatia were also spotted throwing cups towards opposition players.

As reported by the Daily Express, BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce, who was covering Croatia's game against Italy on Monday night, said: "Players are experiencing plastic cups being thrown at the pitch and it's happening more and more. I was speaking to some Germans and they were saying they won't let it carry on. They will stop people drinking."

UEFA have not yet confirmed their stance, but England legend David Seaman has urged fans to show Southgate more "respect". Seaman told Betway: "Gareth had some empty cups thrown at him after the game and he doesn't deserve that.

Gareth Southgate applauds fans after the draw with Slovenia

"The standards that the fans are expecting are all thanks to him and his players. It's not going well at this moment, but we've had some fantastic times under Gareth and the fans should respect that.

"We experienced a lot of negativity back in 1996, with Gazza and the dentist's chair incident. In those situations, you close ranks as a team. When pundits and media people have a go at players, it makes it worse. They don’t get relaxed interviews anymore because the players are on guard.

"I find it really difficult to have a go at players, because I've been in that situation before where ex-players have had a go at me, and I would never forget when it felt like a personal attack. The criticism is understandable because we can play so much better, but we need a reality check – we've just finished top of the group."
