Texas coach's controversial decision should end one particular complaint

texas coach's controversial decision should end one particular complaint

University of Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle.

His former players at Texas A&M might not think so now, but recently hired Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle did them a huge favor.

Heck, any athlete considering entering the transfer portal might want to send him a thank-you note.

Because after his controversial decision to pack up and leave the Aggies for the Longhorns this week, no one should ever criticize players for entering the transfer portal again.

In October 2023, for example, retired former college football coach Lou Holtz criticized the portal, arguing that, by staying with one program, athletes "learn perseverance, you learn teamwork, you learn to wait your turn, you learn improvement.

"When you transfer, all you do is change the address of your problems. The problem's with you," he continued.

That's nonsense.

Entering the portal doesn't mean a player has any faults, just like Schlossnagle is within his rights to leave for a better-paying job whenever he sees fit.

Schlossnagle's biggest sin in this debacle was his arrogance when asked about potentially taking the Texas job.

After losing Game 3 of the men's College World Series on Monday to Tennessee, 6-5, a reporter asked Schlossnagle about the Texas rumors. The coach blasted the reporter's "selfish" question while feigning allegiance to Texas A&M.

"I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again," he said.

Schlossnagle later apologized.

Following his spineless move, seven Aggies player entered the portal, including SEC Freshman of the Year Gavin Grahovac.

Those departures threaten to cripple Texas A&M, which looked like it was building toward long-term success.

Of course, there is one quick fix for the Aggies. They can simply poach another top coach and his top recruits, too.

No one would blame them.
