Metro is for everyone! Plus moaning fans and no stars for Beckham

Can you ever take too many copies of Metro? We don’t think so. However, in today’s MetroTalk, a commenter, who works in a ticket office has noticed arguments ensue over people taking too many.

Meanwhile, he’s been stubbed for a knighthood in the past, but he’s destined for a star on the walk of fame, readers react to David Beckham joining Hollywood’s legends and they’re not best pleased.

And, do footballers have an obligation to play an entertaining game or only to win? And, one commenter wishes Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer would just say it straight.

Metro is for everyone!

I work in a train station and we have a Metro newspaper stand outside the booking office.

Several passengers take between five and 20 newspapers for local businesses and nursing homes.

Personally, I have no issues with this but some staff and passengers feel it’s unfair and claim they’re for passengers only… some staff even argue with people over it!

Are they for passengers only or just whoever wants one? The latter, I assume.

I’m hoping some of my colleagues (and disgruntled members of the public) see this and stop taking it personally when people are doing good deeds and handing them to the elderly in care homes… or just giving people a break from the mental stresses of life by doing the sudoku or crossword while enjoying a coffee. But they’re still top of group C?

It’s not about how you win as long as you’re winning (Picture: Stu Forster/Getty Images)

I’m fed up with people moaning about England’s performance in the Euros. They ended up top of their group, what’s wrong with that? Cup football is about not losing and that’s what they’ve done – not lost.

I can hear the pundits now: ‘England played their best game, but they lost.’ At least leave the moaning until there is something to moan about. Martin, London

I wonder if we could send Pep Guardiola over to Germany and disguise him as Gareth Southgate. Just take a few inches off Pep and stick a waistcoat on him and you’d never know. Mark, Chertsey

England fans may moan but at least they were protected from playing any of the big teams in the group stage, unlike Scotland who had to face Germany in the opening game. Seeding tournaments like this needs to stop as it is unfair to the smaller football nations and gives an unfair advantage to others. T, Glasgow

David Beckham to get star

Fewer than 1% of stars on the walk of fame have been awarded in sports entertainment (Picture: Ryan Browne/REX/Shutterstock)

As a fan of all the great and the good in the movie world, I am disgusted David Beckham is having his name on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood Boulevard (Metro, Wed). What the hell has he got to do with Hollywood? Is nothing sacred? Steve, Harrow

I believe some letters in MetroTalk about the war in Ukraine miss the point about Russia’s strategy.

Russia and China are trying to secure resources. This includes fawning over resource-rich African states with Chinese investment and Russia providing stolen Ukrainian wheat to control the continent, all the while making Africa anti-West. Ted, Reading

Why no answers?

Now tell us what you’re going to do about it (Picture: Stefan Rousseau/PA Wire/PA Images)

Interviewer to Sir Keir Starmer. ‘What are you going to do about A?’ Starmer gives a description of what the situation with A is but no answer about what he’s going to do about it. Interviewer. ‘What are you going to do about B?’ Starmer gives a description of the situation surrounding B but no answer as to what he’s going to do about it.

It’s what he does every time – it’s impossible to get an answer on what he’s going to do about anything.

I single out Starmer because what he does is so transparent.

People are taken in because they agree with the description, which is correct, but you never ever get an answer. ANTONY, via Metro.co.uk

Regarding the 23-year-old woman who was kicked and verbally abused by a stranger on the London Underground and who said other passengers did nothing to help her (Metro, Wed).

‘I made eye contact with a guy opposite me,’ said victim Scarlett Owens, ‘and he just shrugged.’

The advice given in Tube carriages is only to intervene if you feel safe to do so.

Unfortunately, this does mean that the worse the attack, the less likely the victim is to get help. Jean Anderson, Walthamstow

Driven to distraction? (Credits: Getty Images)

I am not a parent but I believe they
have one duty – to ensure the safety and welfare of their children. But every day
I see parents out with their kids and so engrossed in their phone they are completely unaware of their surroundings.

An example of this was a lady, with a little girl in tow, walk out in front of me without checking for oncoming traffic, forcing me into an unceremonious emergency stop. This behaviour seems particularly prevalent since the 20mph speed limit was introduced.

Let’s face it, there are a lot of distractions in cars these days, from the 17 buttons to set the temperature correctly, to the 35 buttons needed to scroll and find your favourite streaming song, so I beg parents to put the phone away and maintain vigilance when near the roads. Who knows, you might actually start talking to your kids! Steven, London
