5 features that Apple AirPods Pro may get with iOS 18
Apple is set to roll out the iOS 18 update for iPhones at its iPhone 16 launch event which is expected to be held in Septemeber. The upcoming iOS 18 software update will be packed with features for supported iPhones and promises to enhance the AirPods Pro experience with several advanced new capabilities. At the company’s annual developer conference, WWDC 2024, the Cupertino-based tech giant announced some of these features which will also use machine learning and AI improvements. However, a few other unannounced ones are also expected to arrive with the update. Here is a list of AirPods Pro features that are expected to arrive later this year when iOS 18 is released to the general public:
Head gestures to interact with Siri
Apple is introducing new head gestures for hands-free control of AirPods Pro. This feature will allow users to answer or decline calls with a simple nod or shake of the head. Additionally, Siri Interactions will enable users to handle calls, messages, notifications, and more, all without speaking.
Voice isolation for better calling
Apple's iPhones have a calling feature that makes the user’s voice clearer to the person they’re speaking to, even in a noisy environment. With iOS 18, Apple is adding Voice Isolation to the AirPods Pro to reduce loud background sounds.
Typically, the microphones on AirPods Pro pick up a wide range of environmental sounds, such as wind around the caller. However, with Voice Isolation, machine learning will identify these sounds, block out ambient noise, and prioritise your voice for clearer communication.
Personalized Spatial Audio for gaming
Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking will soon be available for gaming on AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. This feature will offer the immersive audio experience customers enjoy while listening to music or watching movies and shows.
Apple claims that AirPods Pro will offer the best wireless audio latency it has ever delivered for mobile gaming. Users will also experience enhanced voice quality, including 16-bit, 48kHz audio, for clearer communication with teammates and other players. Additionally, game developers can integrate spatial audio into their games for a more immersive audio experience.
More control over Adaptive Audio Control
Apple's second-generation AirPods Pro feature Adaptive Audio, known as Adaptive Noise Control, which adjusts sound and active noise cancellation based on your environment.
Currently, Adaptive Audio is an all-or-nothing setting, but that may change with iOS 18. Apple may introduce a "Customize Adaptive Audio" menu that may allow users to fine-tune the setting to permit more or less noise.
Hearing Aid mode for improved accessibility
According to a March report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, AirPods Pro may receive a new "hearing aid mode" with the release of iOS 18 later this year. While AirPods Pro already include a Conversation Boost feature that enhances the volume and clarity of voices directly in front of the wearer, Apple has not yet marketed the earbuds as a hearing aid device.
