In what may come as major relief from the heatwave that had gripped Northwest India, the region is likely to witness heavy rainfall later this week as monsoon advances, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. The weather department in its latest forecast said that rainfall activity will increase over Northwest India on June 28 and 29.

The IMD said that conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into the remaining parts of Northb Arabian Sea, Gujarat State, Madhya Pradesh; some more parts of Rajasthan; remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar; most parts of East Uttar Pradesh; some more parts of West Uttar Pradesh; some parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, northern parts of Punjab and northern parts of Haryana during next 3-4 days.

The IMD has predicted isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Rajasthan on June 26th and 27th. The rainfall is expected to increase with fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall during June 28-30 over these regions.

Uttarakhand is likely to witness isolated very heavy rainfall during June 28-30, while East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh will also see isolated very heavy rains on June 28, 29 and 30.

Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Bihar on June 26, Odisha on June 27 and 28, Arunachal Pradesh during June 27-30, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland,

Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during June 28-30.

The IMD has also warned of isolated very heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka on June 27 and 28, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe on June 26 and 27 and Tamil Nadu on June 26.

Heatwave Status And Temperatures in India

The IMD has said that heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Punjab on June 26 and abate thereafter.

On Tuesday, the highest maximum temperature of 45.4°C was reported at Jaisalmer (West Rajasthan) over the country while heatwave conditions were observed in isolated pockets of Punjab and west Bihar.

Maximum temperatures were in the range of 40-43°C over some parts of Punjab and West Rajasthan and in isolated pockets of Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh, southwest Bihar and northwest Jharkhand on Tuesday. These were above normal by 2-4°C over these regions.
