Gary Neville walked into brutal Roy Keane joke that left ITV studio in hysterics
Roy Keane left Gary Neville gobsmacked after a brutal jibe about his failed managerial career.
The pair were part of the ITV punditry crew for England’s miserable draw with Slovenia on Tuesday night. The stalemate saw Gareth Southgate receive severe criticism.
The England boss was met with fury from fans, with some choosing to boo, while others threw plastic cups at the end of the game. Responding to the fans, he said: "I understand it.
“I'm not going to back away from it. The most important thing is we stay with the team. I understand the narrative towards me. That’s better for the team than it being towards them but it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any other team qualify and receive similar. I’m not going to back away from it.”
Neville was given the job to pick through Southgate’s comments. He compared the situation to his short stint with Spanish side Valencia.
The Man United icon said: "Mark, I was over in Spain for a very short period and they [the media] were brutal and I suspect that if you talked to..."
Keane then interjected by claiming that his former teammate still managed to sun himself in Eastern Spain. He replied: "That was just at Valencia. You were somewhere really nice."
The comment left Keane’s colleagues Ian Wright and Ange Postecoglou in stitches, while Neville was left flustered. He recovered his composure to say: "The questions they [journalists] ask you are a lot more tactical and a lot more dangerous for a coach than maybe with the English broadcasters."

Neville was appointed at Valencia in December 2015. However, he won just three of his 16 league games before being sacked.
Keane is not the only one of Neville’s colleagues to poke fun at his short stint at the Mestalla. Jamie Carragher also claimed in December that he should have replaced the under-fire Erik ten Hag at Man United.
A tweet read: "Gary Neville at Valencia: 28 games, 11 losses, 39 goals, 38 goals conceded. Ten Hag 23/24: 26 games, 13 losses, 33 goals, 41 goals conceded. ‘Worst manager ever’ vs Mr ‘Eras come to an end’. Carragher then replied: "Give it Gary till the end of the season….."
Since his ill-fated spell with Valencia, Neville has yet to return to management. Instead, he remains focused on his punditry career, as well as his role as owner at Salford City.
