Lauren Boebert Mocked For Sporting Fake Trump Sneakers After Election Win
U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., speaks to supporters during a primary election watch party, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in Windsor, Colo. Boebert, who won her primary on Tuesday in the state's 4th Congressional District, was mocked on social media on Wednesday for sporting fake Donald Trump sneakers at her victory party.
Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican who won her primary on Tuesday in the state's 4th Congressional District, was mocked on social media on Wednesday for sporting fake Donald Trump sneakers at her victory party.
Tuesday's election was Boebert's first in Colorado's 4th Congressional District, a political shift compared to her successful election outcomes dating to 2020 when she was first elected to represent the state's 3rd Congressional District in the rural, right-leaning eastern part of the state as well as some more competitive Denver suburbs.
The Associated Press (AP) called Tuesday's race at 9:22 p.m. ET, less than 30 minutes after polls closed in Colorado. As of 10:30 p.m. ET, Boebert had earned nearly 44 percent of voters' support, with 74 percent of the votes counted. The candidate closest to Boebert was Jerry Sonnenberg, with 14.1 percent.
While taking the stage at her election night victory party, Boebert, a staunch Trump ally, wore a white "Make America Great Again" hat with Trump's signature across the bill and a pair of reflective gold sneakers that resembled the shoes sold by the former President.
However, speaking to Westword, Boebert joked her Trump sneakers are not the original ones being sold by the former president.
"These are very China, but I'm okay with that," Boebert told Westword, laughing. "If I could've bought the OGs, I would have."
Newsweek has reached out to Boebert's office via email for comment.
According to the official Trump website selling the sneakers GetTrumpSneakers.com, which have now been sold out, the sneakers are on pre-order and are "estimated to ship in July 2024."
Trump previously announced the launch of the 1,000 custom limited edition Trump sneakers named the "Never Surrender High Tops," which feature an American flag with metallic stars on the back and "T" embossed on the leather, at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia in February.
However, since Boebert was seen sporting the sneakers on Tuesday, some have taken to X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday to mock the congresswoman.
Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of liberal media outlet MeidasTouch noted the sneaker writing on X, "Boebert showed up to her victory party last night wearing Trump sneakers. Turns out they were fake imitations not sold by Trump that were Made in China."
X user @sandiechill wrote, "Classless. But handy!"
While another X user Agatha noted the shoes are fake citing the official sneaker website writing, "Of course they're fake. I just visited the shoe website just now. All pairs of Stinky's sneakers are still on pre-order. As in, NONE of them have been shipped out."
Since the launch of the sneakers, the shoes have been selling at hugely marked-up prices, with one pair in February on the online auction site eBay listed for more than $450,000 having been sold.
The original retail price of the sold-out shoes on the official website was $399, but one eBay seller flipped them on February 18 with an asking price of over 1,000 times that.
It is unclear if those shoes were shipped.
Meanwhile, Trump endorsed Boebert in March in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, and also gave her a shout-out during a campaign rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, in which he suggested that she would "do fantastically in [her] district."
On Tuesday Trump shared a graphic of him and Boebert to his Truth Social account announcing Boebert's win, alongside a link to his campaign's website.
Boebert will face the winner of her district's Democratic primary, Trisha Calvarese in November.
